HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : El Camino Real Slams Race Into 3-Way Tie

Bryce Welch drove in all of El Camino Real High’s runs Thursday with a grand slam and a run-scoring single as El Camino beat Taft, 5-1, in a West Valley League game at El Camino Real. The victory, coupled with Chatsworth’s 1-0 win over Cleveland, creates a three-way tie for first place among Cleveland, Chatsworth and El Camino Real, all at 3-1.

Welch, who was 2 for 3, hit a grand slam to left field in the fifth inning to give El Camino a 4-1 lead. An inning later, Welch lined a single up the middle, enabling Rob Bumgarner to score from second. Bumgarner was 2 for 3 and scored 2 runs.

Mike Teich pitched a three-hitter, striking out nine and walking one for his first victory of the season against no losses.

Taft, which has lost all four of its games this season, scored its only run on Scott Cohen’s RBI single in the first inning.

BASEBALL

Art Lowe led off the fifth inning with a double, then scored on a one-out double by John Haselbusch to give Chatsworth a 1-0 win over Cleveland in a West Valley League game at Chatsworth. Shawn Bowen (2-0) pitched a complete game. . . . Juan Doroteo pitched a one-hitter and drove in four runs as Grant defeated Sylmar, 13-1, in an East Valley League game at Sylmar. Shawn Fontenot broke up Doroteo’s no-hit bid with a one-out single in the sixth inning. Doroteo struck out five and walked four, and was 4 for 5, including 2 triples, to lead Grant’s 12-hit attack. . . . Bill Chavez was 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs to lead Poly (7-0) to a 17-0 win over North Hollywood in an East Valley League game. Greg Nealon (4-0) pitched four innings without giving up a run and has not allowed a run in his past 20 innings.

Seth Ernsdorf threw 5 innings of two-hit relief and Highland Hall (4-2) stole 14 bases in a 13-11 nonleague victory over Cal Prep at Balboa Park. Wes Parrish was 2 for 4, including a three-run homer, and had 5 RBIs. Aaron Rudelson was 2 for 3 with six stolen bases for Highland Hall (4-2). . . . Thousand Oaks scored 10 runs in the second inning to defeat Manalea, Hawaii, 13-10, in a nonleague game at Thousand Oaks (3-7). Thousand Oaks’ big inning included Russell Kellogg’s grand slam, Steve Fisco’s three-run home run and Darren Shoen’s two-run homer.

SOFTBALL

Chris Singer hit a two-run double to spark a three-run fifth inning, but Newbury Park (5-1, 3-0) needed a sparkling defensive play in the seventh inning to beat Westlake, 5-4, in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park. Trailing, 5-4, Westlake (1-2) had runners at second and third with one out in the seventh inning when third baseman Stacey Frydenberg made a diving catch of a line drive. Frydenberg then tagged out the runner at third for a game-ending double play. . . . Chatsworth scored eight runs in the second inning en route to a 20-2 win over Taft in a nonleague game at Chatsworth. Christina Roopenian pitched a two-hitter and was 1 for 3 with one RBI and three runs scored. Stephanie Ellis was 2 for 2 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored for Chatsworth (4-1).

Laura Fawcett had 11 strikeouts and allowed only two hits to lead Verdugo Hills to a 5-0 win over Birmingham in a nonleague game at Birmingham. . . . Monica Alvarez drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the seventh to give Moorpark (5-4, 2-1) a 6-5 win over Carpinteria in a Tri-Valley League game at Moorpark. Alvarez was 3 for 3 with a triple. . . . Erin Sweeney was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs to lead La Reina (2-1 in league) to a 7-6 win over Oak Park in a Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park. Michele Fetro was 1 for 3 with 3 RBIs for Oak Park (4-2, 1-2). . . . Palmdale defeated Saugus, 5-1, in a Golden League game. Lori White had a triple and a single for Saugus.

TRACK

Ralph Blanks ran the 330 intermediate hurdles in a school-record 40.3 to lead Royal to a 78-49 win over Newbury Park in a Marmonte League meet. Blanks broke the mark of 40.4 he set two weeks ago against Simi Valley. Chad Sourbeer won the 100 (11.1) and 220 yards (22.9), Doug Noble won the high jump (6-2) and the pole vault (12-6), and Stacey Gibson won the long jump (21-4 1/2) and the 120-yard high hurdles (14.9) for Royal (2-1). Sourbeer, Gibson, Blanks and Cam Rast won the mile relay in 3:28.8. . . . Bobby Sommers won the pole vault (11-0) and triple-jumped a school-record 42-5 to lead Agoura to an 85 1/2-29 1/2 win over Santa Paula in a Frontier League meet at Agoura. Brian King won the 100 meters (11.6) and the shotput (43-0), and Dave Kelley won the 440 (53.4) and the 220 (24.4) for Agoura (4-1, 1-0). Agoura’s Bryan Dameworth won the mile (4:26.1) and the two-mile (10:04.7). . . . In girls track, Agoura (5-0, 1-0) was led to a 107-18 win over Santa Paula by double-winners Jenny Whelchel and Julie Tingle, who won the 100 meters (13.2) and the 220 (27.78). Whelchel won the shotput (40-6) and the discus (108-10).

GOLF

Crespi’s Sam Spinello and his teammate Jeff Mettel shot low scores of 39 to lead Crespi to a 211-219 victory over Notre Dame in a Del Rey League golf match at Woodland Hills Country Club. Mettel had two birdies and Spinello had one on the par-35 nine-hole course. Travis Williams shot a 42 for Notre Dame.
