HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Alemany Wins on 2-Hitter

Junior Charlie Winner threw his second straight two-hitter as Alemany defeated Garden Grove, 6-1, in a third-round consolation-bracket game Saturday in the Palos Verdes tournament.

Winner (2-0), who has allowed just one earned run and five hits in 18 innings this season, struck out seven.

“We knew he had the potential to be a good pitcher,” Alemany Coach Jim Ozella said. “He lacked confidence until he threw that first two-hitter. Now, he thinks he can get anyone out.”

Greg Biley led off the game with his fourth home run and Pat Aragon had four hits. Bill Horvat added two doubles for Alemany (7-5).

BASEBALL

Jeff Cirillo had 10 strikeouts to lead Providence to a 10-7 win over Westchester in the consolation round of the Palos Verdes tournament. It was the fourth game in which Cirillo has had at least 10 strikeouts. Cirillo also was 2 for 3 with two runs batted in. Steve Ross was 2 for 4 and scored two runs for Providence (7-3).

SOFTBALL

Melody Bolger had a run-scoring single and Robin Thomas walked with the bases loaded in the seventh inning as Newbury Park came from behind to defeat Ocean View, 3-2, in the second round of the Tournament of Champions in Anaheim. Thomas pitched a four-hitter and struck out eight while picking up the victory for Newbury Park (7-1). . . . Chrissy Oliver had 10 strikeouts and drove in the winning run with a triple as Simi Valley upset fifth-ranked La Palma Kennedy, 4-2, in the first round of the Tournament of Champions in Anaheim. In the second round, Kelly Kaufman went 3 for 4 and scored a run to lead Simi Valley (10-2) to a 4-2 victory over Anaheim Canyon.

Debbie Day threw a two-hitter and struck out 13 as Burbank (9-1) beat San Marcos, 9-0, in the second round of the Dos Pueblos tournament. Christy Calderon and Kristi Helsley each went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Laura Robinson also had two RBIs. In a first-round game, Kim Bailey struck out 14 as Burbank beat Dos Pueblos JV, 2-1. . . . Stevie Campbell was 2 for 2, but Santa Barbara scored a run in the seventh inning and defeated Royal, 3-2, in the second round of the Dos Pueblos tournament. In Royal’s first-round game, Denise White, Nikki Noyes and Julie Myers had run-scoring singles to spark a six-run first inning as Royal beat St. Bonaventure, 10-3.

Hart advanced to the championship game of its tournament with a 9-1 win over North Hollywood and a 6-5 win over Sylmar. Hart will play Crescenta Valley next Saturday at Hart Park for the championship. Hart’s Nikki Brodowy was 1 for 2 with three RBIs against North Hollywood.
