San Diego High School Baseball : Madison Defeats Point Loma, 7-6

Pete Valdez scored what proved to be the winning run on Chris Penzini’s ninth-inning sacrifice fly as Madison defeated Point Loma, 7-6, in a City Eastern League baseball game at Point Loma.

Chuck Frazier (4-0) pitched all nine innings to earn the win for Madison (2-1, 6-2).

Valdez doubled to lead off the ninth, advanced to third on a single by Walter Popiella, setting up up Penzini’s game-winner. Valdez had three hits and two RBIs.

Rigo Beltran (0-1) pitched the last six innings and took the loss for Point Loma (1-2, 5-3).

In other City Eastern League games:

Patrick Henry 9, Mira Mesa 5--Mike Miller hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to give Patrick Henry (3-1, 5-2-1) the victory. Miller had a two-run single in the fifth to tie the score, 5-5. Tony McVicar (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the win in relief. Lance Lowery added three hits and an RBI for Patrick Henry.

Serra 5, Morse 4--Serra took advantage of five Morse errors to score four unearned runs at Morse. Serra (2-1, 6-4) had only two hits but relied on Mike Kampe, who scattered seven hits and went the distance for his fourth win in five decisions. Javier Brown had two hits and two RBIs for Morse (0-3), which left two runners on base at the end of the game.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

USDHS 6, Kearny 4--Pete Hawes’ two-out double capped a four-run seventh inning for University of San Diego High School at Kearny. Hawes, who had three hits and three RBIs, doubled in two runs to put USDHS (1-2) ahead, 5-4, after trailing, 4-2, going into the inning. Tom Stilinovich was the winning pitcher. Eric Mercado was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for Kearny (0-3, 2-4-2).

Mission Bay 2, La Jolla 1-- Scott Vonderleith and Mike McMahon each singled in runs in the fifth at La Jolla. Vonderleith struck out nine en route to his third victory without a loss. Brent Woodall was the loser for La Jolla. Both teams are 2-1 and 6-3.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

Lincoln 14, Hoover 7--Hoover led, 6-1, in the fourth inning, but Lincoln rallied in a game played at Sunshine Pony Field in Southeast San Diego. Lincoln had three players hit home runs, including Daniel Hernandez who was also the winning pitcher. Marcus Hempstead had a home run for Hoover (2-1).

Christian 13, Crawford 7--Christian scored six runs in the sixth inning to put the game away at Christian. Christian (2-1, 6-4), with 13 hits, had four players with two or more. David Jeremiah was 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs and Chris Waymire was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the attack. Crawford dropped to 0-1-2 in league.

Briefly--San Diego 4, St. Augustine 1.

AVOCADO LEAGUE

Escondido 5, San Pasqual 2--Mike Scales struck out six and hit a home run at San Pasqual. Gary Larrabee was 3 for 3 with an RBI for Escondido (1-0), and Scales was 2 for 3. Todd Brose and Jay Jures were each 2 for 3 for San Pasqual (0-1, 4-5). Brose also hit a home run.

San Marcos 17, El Camino 5--Steve Tidd and Tom Morton combined for eight hits and eight RBIs at San Marcos. Tidd, the leadoff batter, went 5 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs, and Morton went 3 for 4 with five RBIs. Jose Canedo was 3 for 5 and scored two runs for San Marcos (1-0, 4-4). Keith Helm (3-2) pitched four innings for the win.

Briefly--Carlsbad 18, Ramona 7.

PALOMAR LEAGUE

Fallbrook 4, Vista 3--Mark Ringkamp allowed his first earned run in 23 innings this season, but with relief help from Bill Dunckel at Fallbrook, was able to gain his fourth win without a loss. Vista (0-1, 2-4-1) scored two unearned runs to take a 2-1 lead. Fallbrook (1-0, 6-1) countered with three runs in the fifth--two on T.J. Flynn’s home run. In the seventh Vista closed to 4-3, and Dunckel came in to get the final two outs for his second save.
