HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Thornhill’s 3rd Homer Downs Camarillo, 11-8

Wally Thornhill’s third home run of the game, a three-run shot in the sixth inning that snapped an 8-8 tie, led Newbury Park to an 11-8 Marmonte League victory at Camarillo on Wednesday.

Thornhill, who has five home runs, was 4 for 5 with 7 runs batted in. Tim Bohling was 4 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored for Newbury Park (5-6, 2-1 in league).

Jeff Berman (2-1) pitched the final 3 innings to earn the win, allowing no hits or walks and striking out four.

Jeremy Sumrow was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and Gil Valencia was 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs for Camarillo (0-8, 0-4).

SOFTBALL

Lisa Huffaker had four hits, including two home runs, and drove in seven runs to lead El Camino Real to a 27-1 West Valley League win over Birmingham. Tammy Ottino had three hits and five RBIs and Jenny Fleming had 2 home runs and 5 RBIs for El Camino Real (8-0, 2-0). . . . Robin Donish and Angie Marzetta each had 3 hits and 2 RBIs to lead Taft (3-4, 1-1) to a 16-2 West Valley League win over Cleveland.

Michelle Blaha’s triple paced Sylmar to a 5-1 East Valley League win over Chatsworth. Teri Clement and Keri Rincon each had 2 hits and 2 RBIs for Sylmar (5-3, 2-0).

Janeen Duncan allowed one hit in four innings, struck out five, and drove in two runs with a single to spark Alemany to a 7-3 nonleague victory at Hoover.

VOLLEYBALL

The setting of center Javier Avitia and eight kills each by Corey Davidson and Frank Anaya led North Hollywood to a 15-6, 3-15, 15-6, 5-15, 15-1 Mid-Valley League win over Grant.

Warren Chen (six aces) and center Larry Fernandez keyed Chatsworth’s 15-3, 15-5, 15-1 West Valley League victory at Birmingham. Greg Weaver had six kills for Chatsworth (6-2, 4-0).

Keith Fitzgerald had 13 kills and Ron Brabant added 10 in Bell-Jeff’s 15-10, 15-7, 15-12 Santa Fe League victory over St. Genevieve. Jay Daza had 17 service points for Bell-Jeff, including the first eight points of the second game. . . . Matt Pakkala had seven blocks to lead Chaminade (7-3, 5-2) to a 15-9, 15-3, 4-15, 15-3 Santa Fe League win at Cathedral.

GIRLS TRACK

Jenny Fitzgerald and Vicki Hosek each won two events to lead Notre Dame to an 85-33 San Fernando Valley League win over Chaminade. Fitzgerald won the 100 (12.7) and 200 meters (26.8), and Hosek took the 880-yard run (2:32.8) and the mile (5:44). Tiffany Hill set a Notre Dame girls record in the shotput with a throw of 32-7 1/2.

GOLF

Lance Oriti shot a 42 to lead Grant to a 225-230 upset of Cleveland (5-2 in league) at the par-36 Woodley Golf Course. Cleveland’s Scott Rossebo’s 40 was the low round of the day.Robert Spitz finished with a 43 for Grant (3-3-1 in league).
