Ellis and Egan Head the Selections for North All-Star Basketball Teams

Mater Dei High School center LeRon Ellis, who led the Monarchs to the state Division I boys’ basketball title, heads the list of selections for the North team in the 22nd Orange County All-Star game June 20.

Ellis, 6-feet 11-inches, signed a national letter of intent with the University of Kentucky last fall. He averaged 23.5 points and 9 rebounds for Mater Dei (31-1). Teammate Chris Patton will join Ellis on the 12-man squad.

Rancho Alamitos and Los Alamitos also had two players selected. Randy Morales (24.7-point average) and Craig Paquette (22) will represent Rancho Alamitos. Forward Mo Warner and point guard Mark Parkinson will represent Los Alamitos.

Steve Brooks of Los Alamitos will coach the team. Brooks, who attended Huntington Beach High, played on the South team in the 1972 game.

The game, sponsored by the Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club, will be played at Orange Coast College’s Peterson Gym or UC Irvine’s Bren Center.

High-scoring guards Carrie Egan of Brea-Olinda and Cindy Vyskocil of Whittier Christian head the list of selections for the North team in the 10th All-Star girls’ game, also on June 20.

Egan, a three-time All-Southern Section performer at Brea, scored 1,600 points in her career. She established an Orange County record with 56 points against Anaheim that was later broken when Vyskocil scored 59.

Vyskocil was the second-leading scorer in the Southern Section, averaging 34.6 points. Ursula Lovely of Kennedy, also selected to the team, averaged 26.4 points and 15.8 rebounds.

Debi Woelke of Valencia, the Orange League’s coach of the year, will coach the team. Woelke led Valencia to a 19-5 record in her first season.
