Orange County All-Star Wrestling : Malavar Helps Lead North to Seventh Straight Win

Share

Brian Malavar wanted to do more than help the North maintain its dominance of the Orange County All-Star wrestling meet Saturday night. He wanted to end all doubt as to who is the county’s top 154-pound wrestler.

“I just wanted to prove to everybody I was the best,” said Malavar, Loara High School’s three-sport standout, after he beat Capistrano Valley’s David Hynan, 8-0, at Canyon High School. “One county paper had me No. 1 and the other had him No. 1, so I wanted to settle it for good.”

The North won seven of 13 weight classes to win, 30-23. It was the seventh consecutive victory for the North, which leads the series, 10-7.

Still, it took a 6-3 victory by Savanna’s Tom Osendorf over Pacifica’s Steve Palczewki in the heavyweight class to wrap up the North victory. Edison’s Bill Dorman edged Canyon’s Ken Gominsky, 2-1, in the 191-pound division to keep the South close.

In another featured match, Chris Leuschen of Cypress, representing the North, upset Fountain Valley’s Tom Odar, 6-4, in the 138-pound division. Odar won the Southern Section 4-A championship by beating Leuschen over a month ago.

Other North winners included Nick Kob of Loara (98), Dan Tisone of Canyon (112), Lenny Fontanez of Los Alamitos (132) and Todd Tomazic of El Dorado (165).

South winners were Kevin Petrisko of Capistrano Valley (105), Brad Woodbury of Fountain Valley (119), Jason Buzzard of Newport Harbor (126), Art Orosco of Garden Grove (145). Edy Andros of Loara and Scott Pryor of Estancia battled to a 5-5 tie in the 175-pound class.
