High-Scoring Guard Eget to Sign With CS Northridge

Barry Eget, a gym rat from Crescenta Valley High, will be taking up house at a new place in the fall. The Southern Section scoring champion is one of three basketball players who have said they will sign a national letter of intent today with Cal State Northridge.

The 6-1 guard averaged 25.7 points a game last season and set a state high school record by making all 21 free throws in a game against Arcadia in February.

“He knows how to score, there’s no question,” said CSUN Coach Pete Cassidy late Wednesday night. “He played on a team without a big man inside and still averaged 28 a game.”

Alan Fraser of Fullerton College and David Zeyen of San Joaquin Delta also verbally commited to Northridge.

Fraser, 6-6, averaged nine points and seven rebounds last season. He probably will play power forward for the Matadors. Cassidy said he will be tried at both forward spots.

“He’s a tough guy who knows how to rebound, score and run the floor,” Cassidy said.

Zeyen, another 6-6 forward, chose Northridge over CCAA rivals Chapman and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, as well as United States International University and Westmont.

He was twice selected All-Camino Norte Conference and averaged 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds for a San Joaquin Delta team that finished 29-3 after being ranked No. 1 among state junior colleges for most of last season.

The Matadors are also reportedly close to signing Chuck McGavern, a guard from Orange Coast College, and Jemarl Baker, a guard from Manual Arts High.
