Los Angeles Times 1987 ALL-STARS : Flintridge Sacred Heart Dominates Girls All-Star Team With 3 Top Players

Five-foot-tall Julie Moscicki was the spark plug of the Flintridge Sacred Heart girls basketball team.

She brought the ball downcourt and dribbled around defenders while signaling plays to a front line dominated by tall, talented Anna Lund and Whitney Karm, both 5-10.

One of the finest high school passers (9.6 assists a game), Moscicki fed Lund and Karm and they scored. Moscicki, too, was a hotshot. At a distance or on daring drives through rangy defensive traffic, she scored, averaging 8 points a game.

Sacred Heart of La Canada Flintridge was the only team in the greater Glendale area to win a league championship.

With a record of 17-4, Sacred Heart dominates the Times All-Glendale Section All-Star Team with its three stars.

Moscicki, Lund (17 rebound average) and Karm (15 rebounds) are among 10 all-stars.

Four other teams with winning seasons have players on the team: Hoover of Glendale (13-7), Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge (13-8), Marshall of Silver Lake (12-9) and Holy Family of Glendale (12-9). Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta and La Canada High also have all-stars.

Dollie Lucero, Marshall senior, is a Times all-star for the second time. Nicknamed “Awesome,” the nonstop 5-8 center thrilled grandstanders. Lucero averaged 22.4 points, 18 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. She had a high game of 35 points, hit 60% on free throws and earned co-most valuable player in the Los Angeles City Section’s Northern League.

Also making all-star is Lucero’s teammate, 5-5 junior guard Maile Feig, who excelled as a playmaker.

Holy Family High’s all-star is center Shelly Treat, a dominating 5-10 center whose 24-point average led area girls. She controlled the boards, averaging 15 rebounds.

Heidi Passarella is Hoover’s all-star, excelling on a balanced team of playmakers. The 5-6 guard-forward averaged 7 steals, 13 points and 8 rebounds.

Flintridge Prep produced a superior center, 5-9 Tina Fejtek, who dominated opposition with 16 rebounds and 12 points a game.

Two other juniors are on the Times team.

Leilani Artis of Crescenta Valley averaged 14 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 assists while Melinda O’Brien of La Canada High, tallest all-star at 6 feet, averaged 16 rebounds and 10.5 points.

The coaches’ comment on their players:

Bill Sanchez, Flintridge Sacred Heart: “Moscicki’s a superb athlete. She’s all-CIF in volleyball and softball. Lund also is an all-CIF volleyballer and has signed to attend Cal Poly Pomona. Karm’s an A student and she’s headed for Santa Clara University.”

Beth Ercek, Marshall: “Lucero has developed into one of the finest prep players. Dollie puts 110% into performances. She’s thinking of playing community college ball, maybe Glendale College. Feig was a flash for us on the fast break.”

Randy Boal, La Canada High: “O’Brien is still developing and can be a fine college prospect. She has power and strength. Melinda also plays volleyball and is a shot-putter.”

Bill Richards, Crescenta Valley: “College scouts are looking at Artis. Leilani has great spring for basketball and volleyball. She’s a .400 hitter in softball.”

John Ruch, Flintridge Prep: “Fejtek had 26 rebounds in one game. She hustles from start to finish, a fierce competitor.”

Mike Thornton, Holy Family: “Treat is the kind of player every coach wants, always full of pep, hustle and shouts to boost spirit of teammates. She had a high of 37 points and made all-tournament at St. Anthony two years in a row.”

Bob Henry, Hoover: “Passarella consistently played well. Only 113 pounds, Heidi held her own on the court, even in rough exchanges. She long-jumped 16-5 for a school record in track.”

The all-star boys and girls teams, each consisting of 10 members, their coaches and parents will be guests of the Times at 9 a.m. Sunday at the annual Times High School Basketball Awards Brunch where all-star teams from 10 circulation areas will be honored at the Anaheim Hilton. The featured Speaker will be first-year USC Coach George Raveling. The players and coaches of the year from each area will be announced.

The teams were chosen on the basis of a poll of area coaches, who are asked to fill out ballots nominating their own players and opponents, plus the observations of college scouts and sportswriters. Each player will receive the traditional Times golden basketball plaque and award certificate.
