San Diego College Baseball : SDSU Wins Nightcap, 6-1, and Splits a Doubleheader With Wyoming

Billy Miller’s bases-loaded triple in the second game sparked a four-run fourth inning as San Diego State split a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader with Wyoming Friday night at Smith Field.

Wyoming (4-2, 18-10) won the first game, 3-1, in 8 innings. San Diego State (3-4, 21-18-1) won the second game, 6-1.

In the first game, SDSU tied the score in the seventh when Scott Middaugh doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Kasey McKeon’s sacrifice fly. Wyoming’s Mike Mulvaney led off the eighth with a home run for a 2-1 lead. Greg Fielder (1-0) was the winner and Rich Holsman (2-4) took the loss.

In the second game, Miller was 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs and Middaugh added a home run. Steve Mills (2-2) was the winner, Tim Daniels (3-3) took the loss.

USD 9, Santa Clara 5--Sean Baron hit two home runs to lead the University of San Diego in a West Coast Athletic Conference victory at San Diego.

Baron hit a two-run homer to give USD (5-9-1, 22-15-1) a 3-1 lead in the seventh. Santa Clara (7-7-1, 20-19-2) scored four runs in the eighth for a 5-3 lead, but Baron hit a second two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to put USD ahead for good, 7-5.

Dave Rolls also hit a two-run home run in the 8th for USD. Baron, who has nine home runs this season, was 3 for 4 with 5 RBIs. Jim Westlund (5-2) pitched 1 innings of relief to get the win. Scott Chiamparino (2-5) was the loser.

USIU 14, Southern Utah State 7--Bob Esquerra and Kevin Robinson had two RBIs each at USIU. Esquerra was 2 for 3, including a two-run home run in the eighth. Robinson was 3 for 5 with a double. Wally Trice (3-2) went the distance, striking out 11 for USIU (21-22-1). Layne Hales was the loser for Southern Utah State (14-14).

Point Loma Nazarene 6, Westmont 2--Steve Wainwright’s fourth-inning two-run home run was the game-winning RBI in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Point Loma Nazarene College. Wainwright was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and A.J. Napier was 3 for 5 with two runs scored for Point Loma Nazarine (5-9, 16-22). Rob Kubisiak (5-5) struck out seven and scattered 11 hits for the win. Mikael Anderson was the loser for conference-leading Westmont (9-5, 17-17).
