San Diego High School Baseball : Poway Gives It Away, Then Takes It Back in 8th, 8-4

The Poway High School boys’ baseball team scored four runs in the eighth inning to defeat Fallbrook, 8-4, Friday in Palomar League play at Fallbrook.

Poway (1-2, 5-5) led, 4-2, in the seventh inning, but T.J. Flynn hit a two-run home run with one out to send the game into extra innings.

In the eighth, Poway (1-2, 5-5) loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. With two outs, Scott Studebaker beat out a grounder to deep short, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

Poway’s Phil Plantier hit two solo home runs and Fallbrook’s Mark Ringkamp hit a solo home run. Mike Scaggs, who struck out seven, was the winner. Ringkamp took the loss.

In other Palomar League games, Torrey Pines defeated San Dieguito, 5-4, and Orange Glen beat Vista, 4-0.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Granite Hills 13, Mount Miguel 0--Jason DeGroot had five hits and drove in three runs and George Bishop added four hits and four RBIs to lead Granite Hills (4-1, 7-3) to the victory at Mount Miguel. Mike Raskind (4-1) pitched a two-hitter and struck out five as Granite Hills broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning.

El Cajon 6, Monte Vista 1--Gregg Velasco and Bill Rudd had two RBIs each for El Cajon at Monte Vista. Rusty Pennock struck out six in going the distance for El Cajon (2-3, 4-5). Nick Richard (0-2) took the loss for Monte Vista (0-6, 3-9).

Briefly--Helix beat Santana, 7-3, and Valhalla defeated Grossmont, 5-4.

AVOCADO LEAGUE

San Pasqual 3, Ramona 0--Senior left-hander Clint Cruz struck out nine in pitching a three-hit shutout at San Pasqual. The hosts had only two hits but managed to score on a throwing error, a squeeze play and a double steal. Kelly Simpson had two RBIs for San Pasqual (1-3, 5-7). Ramona is 1-2 in league play.

Briefly--San Marcos defeated Oceanside, 8-0, and Carlsbad beat El Camino, 10-4.

NONLEAGUE

Mount Carmel 7, Escondido 4--Ed Van Aelstyn’s RBI single in the seventh broke a 4-4 tie at Kit Carson Park in Escondido. Van Aelstyn also hit a solo home run for Mount Carmel (9-2). Escondido (3-8) committed nine errors.
