SOFTBALL

Pauline Madrid pitched a four-hitter as Pierce defeated Canyons, 2-1, in a Western State Conference game. Madrid struck out seven, walked one and improved her record to 12-9. Pierce (12-9, 7-3 in conference) scored both of its runs in the first inning. Toni Desain walked, stole second and scored on Dianne Nicholls’ double. Kim Cansino singled in Nicholls. Canyons is 7-9, 3-7 in conference.

Santa Monica scored two runs in the fourth inning on a fielding error to beat Moorpark, 2-1, in a Western State Conference game at Santa Monica. With the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth, right fielder Laura Davis dropped Tracy Aplin’s fly ball, allowing two runs to score. Pitcher Karen Mead (9-1) suffered the loss despite striking out eight batters and allowing only three hits and three walks. Corrine Yomane scattered five hits and three walks to earn the victory. Moorpark (16-9, 9-1) scored its only run on Karen Noble’s sacrifice fly. WOMEN’S TENNIS

Kris Anderson won both her matches, but Cal State Northridge (11-8) dropped a 6-3 nonconference match to UC Davis at the Bronco tournament at Cal Poly Pomona. Anderson had CSUN’s only singles win, defeating Danielle Chi, 7-6, 0-6, 6-3, and teamed with Brenda Pantano in doubles to defeat Chi and Karen Astrachan, 6-3, 6-2. GYMNASTICS

Cal State Northridge senior Monica Mayes, placing fifth on the vault with a score of 9.15, advanced to tonight’s finals at the United States Gymnastics Federation nationals at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Freshman Terisa Lacert, CSUN’s only other competitor at the nationals, failed to qualify for the finals, but placed 11th individually with an all-around score of 34.65. Mayes was 27th overall with an all-around score of 33.6. MEN’S SWIMMING

Mike Hurst took victories in the 400 individual medley (4:33.2) and the 200 backstroke (2:10.5) to lead Valley to a 74-24 Western State Conference win over East L.A. Valley finished second in conference with a 6-1 record. Valley’s Adrian Spiga recorded wins in the 50 freestyle (23.8) and 100 freestyle (53.3). GOLF

Pierce and Riverside tied for medalist honors at 428 in a nonconference match at the Victor Valley Course in Victorville. Victor Valley withdrew from the team competition, but Dave Sanders of Victor Valley took the individual title with a 76. Bob Meyerson shot an 82 to lead Pierce.
