Orange County Prep Baseball : Saunders Leads Esperanza Sweep of Rancho Alamitos

Doug Saunders hit a home run in each game to lead Esperanza High School, The Times’ top-ranked team in the Southern Section, to a sweep of Rancho Alamitos in a nonleague doubleheader Saturday at Esperanza.

Saunders also combined with Jason Moler and Rick Edwards to throw a three-hitter in the first game as the Aztecs won, 9-0. Saunders and Moler each went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Moler (3-0) picked up the victory.

In the second game, Saunders was 2 for 2 to lead the Aztecs to a 9-5 victory. Rob Nay (1-0) pitched two innings, allowed two hits and picked up the victory. Eric Franzen went 3 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, and Craig O’Conner had a triple, a run scored and two RBIs for the Aztecs (14-1).

In other nonleague games:

Kennedy 4, Brea-Olinda 1--Mike Shipley hit a two-run double in the fourth inning and Peter Montera pitched a four-hitter and struck out two to lead the Fighting Irish (6-8) at Brea. Steve Rath added an RBI single in the fifth for Kennedy (7-11).

Sunny Hills 10, Anaheim 7--Trevor Painton was 2 for 4 with one run scored and two RBIs and Brad Olynyk was 2 for 5 with a run scored and two RBIs to lead the Lancers at Glover Stadium in Anaheim. Sunny Hills (8-9) scored five runs in the third to break a 4-4 tie. Saul Lopez (4-3) pitched four innings, allowing five runs, for the victory. Anaheim is 2-13.

Woodbridge 8-3, Santiago 2-2--Eric Brougher was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Stan Machesky was 3 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Warriors (10-7) in the opener at Santiago. In the second game, Brougher was 2 for 2 with a home run and Mike Sorensen was 3 for 4 with an RBI for Woodbridge. Tony Alfaro was 3 for 4 with two runs scored for Santiago (5-10) in the nightcap.

Marina 17-3, Katella 5-8--Mark Gerdes hit a three-run triple in the third inning and Kevin Shaw had a two-run single in the sixth and picked up the victory to lead Katella (7-11) to a split at home.

Edison 9-2, Valencia 0-3 (second game, 9 innings)--Bernie Colacchio and Terrence Tewell each hit two-run home runs in the fourth inning and Mike Guccione threw a two-hitter and struck out seven to lead the Chargers (12-6) in the first game. In the second game, Rudy Lopez drove in the winning run with a two-out triple in the ninth for Valencia (9-5).

Fountain Valley 8-9, Rolling Hills 2-2--First baseman Mark Magrann went 7 for 8 with two runs scored and three RBIs to lead the Barons’ sweep at Rolling Hills. Jeff Lyman went 4 for 7 with two runs scored and four RBIs for Fountain Valley. John Pineda (2-1) allowed one hit and struck out two through five innings in the first game for the Barons (7-9). In the second game, Steve Montgomery (3-0) gave up four hits in five innings for Fountain Valley. Rolling Hills is 5-10.

Loara 2-5, Lompoc 7-4--Dan Rodriguez went 3 for 4 with two runs scored to lead the Saxons (10-5) to a split at Lompoc. Alan Evans (4-0) pitched five innings in relief, allowing one run and two hits and striking out three for the victory. In the first game, Lompoc took advantage of eight walks to win.
