Sundevil Invitational : Vista’s Jorgensen Again Runs Away With Honors

For the second consecutive week, Kira Jorgensen of Vista High School was honored at a major Southern California track meet.
Though Jorgensen’s time of 4 minutes 58.61 seconds in the 1,600 meters at Saturday’s Sundevil Invitational at Mount Carmel High School was well off this season’s national best time of 4:51.03--which she set at last weekend’s Arcadia Invitational--it helped her to be named female track athlete of the meet. Jorgensen said, however, she was hardly the same runner she had been a week earlier.
“The way I felt at Arcadia, it was a lot easier,” Jorgensen said. “(At Mount Carmel) everything was really tight. . . . I think it was psychological, just because it’s Mount Carmel and I never do well here.”
Jorgensen did well enough in the 1,600 to edge Tracy Williams of Mountain View High School by 3/100 of a second and break the stadium record of 4:59.3, set by Valhalla’s Cheryl Flowers in 1979. She also anchored the girls’ distance medley relay team, leading Vista past Hawthorne, which had led the first three legs of the race.
“That last mile (in the relay) felt a lot more comfortable than the one I ran against Tracy,” Jorgensen said. “I was a lot more relaxed.”
Jorgensen was one of three San Diego County athletes to get all-meet honors at the Sundevil Invitational, which featured schools from throughout California, Arizona and Nevada.
Mark Davis of San Diego High School was named the meet’s best male track athlete after he won the 1,600 meters in 4:16.02 and the 3,200 in 9:22.1. Jackie Anderson of Mount Miguel, who set a national best in the triple jump with a leap of 40-0 at the Arcadia Invitational, won female field athlete of the meet honors with a winning triple jump of 39-7.
But their accomplishments were upstaged by Kemy Keshmiri of Reno (Nev.) High School. Keshmiri, who broke his national record in the discus at Arcadia with a mark of 224-3, came within 10 inches of bettering that distance. Keshmiri’s toss of 223-5 shattered the Mount Carmel stadium record of 196-5, set two years ago by Brian Blutreich of Capistrano Valley High School.
Keshmiri also won the shotput with a throw of 64-10 1/2. He was named best male field athlete of the meet.
Corey Ealy of Pasadena’s John Muir High School ran the 100 meters in 10.60 to edge Crawford’s Raymond Ethridge by 1/100 of a second and eclipse the stadium record of 10.62 set by Darron Norris in 1984.
In the 200, Ealy edged Ethridge and Curtis Cunway of Hawthorne to win in 21.4. Ealy also anchored Muir’s 400-meter relay team, which set a meet record with a time of 41.9, erasing the mark of 42.0 set by Mira Mesa in 1978.
Stadium and meet records also fell in the girls’ 400-meter relay, as Morse swept past Hawthorne to win in 46.99, bettering the mark of 47.36 set by Long Beach Poly in 1980.
Stacy Leach of Thousand Oaks High School set a meet record with a time of 14.19 in the 100-meter low hurdles, breaking the mark of 14.27 set by Lincoln’s Michelle Outlaw last year.
Terri Mann of Point Loma won the discus with a toss of 144-11.
