HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Alemany Finds Consolation, 16-7

Alemany High’s 16-7 win over North Torrance on Saturday at Alemany provided an appropriate ending to the long, meandering Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament that began March 14 and entered the final round this weekend.

Alemany concluded the tournament with a long, meandering baseball game that featured 23 runs; 24 hits, including 8 for extra bases; 10 errors; a hit batter; a balk; 4 wild pitches; and 3 pitching changes.

The win, which gave Alemany the consolation championship of the tournament, was the team’s 10th straight. Alemany (16-5) broke on top with a six-run first inning, keyed by sophomore Jon Beauchemin’s three-run home run, his third.

Alemany scored four times in the fourth, helped by a two-base, three-run error when North Torrance’s Dustin MacGilivrary dropped Bill Horvat’s two-out fly ball in center field.

Pat Aragon’s three-run double keyed Alemany’s six-run sixth. Aragon was 2 for 4 with 3 runs batted in, and Beauchemin and Joe Cupo, who leads the team with 17, each added three RBIs.

Mike Rooney (3-1) allowed five runs (three earned) and eight hits in four innings and gained the victory. Bill Lucid allowed two runs in three innings and picked up his first save.

Brian Marzorini and MacGilivrary each had two RBIs for North Torrance (12-8-1).

BASEBALL

Providence had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to come from behind and lost to Torrance, 4-2, in the third-place game of the consolation bracket in the Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament. Providence (13-6-1), which trailed, 4-1, after six, closed the deficit in the seventh when Mark Miyamoto scored on a double by Steve Ross. The game ended with the tying run at the plate.

Jim Henderson drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as Westlake salvaged a split of a nonleague doubleheader with a 7-6 win over Lompoc at Westlake. Greg Struhl sent the game into extra innings with a two-out, run-scoring single in the the seventh. Mike Suarez was 4 for 4 and had three RBIs. Lompoc won the first game, 7-6.

SOFTBALL

Led by Samantha Bennett’s three-run home run, La Reina scored 12 runs in the first inning and defeated Bishop Diego, 18-2, in a second-round, consolation bracket game of the Carpinteria Tournament. La Reina lost its first-round game to Miraleste, 2-1. In the second-round game, Michelle Sinclair allowed only two hits and two unearned runs for La Reina (9-5). Sherri Sisco also had a home run.
