Wilshire Handicap : Toro Rides the Winner; McCarron 2nd

Galunpe, ridden by Fernando Toro, took the lead in midstretch and won by three-quarters of a length in the $129,900 Wilshire Handicap for older fillies and mares Sunday at Hollywood Park.

Top Socialite, ridden by Chris McCarron, finished second. On Saturday, McCarron rode Alysheba to victory in the 113th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Two lengths behind Top Socialite was Perfect Match, ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye, in a field of six distaffers, 3 years old and up.

The 6-5 favorite, Hidden Light, finished a distant fifth without menacing under Bill Shoemaker.

Galunpe covered 1 1/16 miles over a firm turf course in 1:41 and earned $75,900 for the victory.

Sent off the 8-5 second choice, Galunpe paid $5.60, $3.60 and $2.60. Top Socialite returned $8 and $4.20 and Perfect Match paid $3.60 to show.

Carrying 118 pounds, Galunpe moved up down the backstretch to join the leaders, responded when asked to take the leader at the furlong marker, drawing off to win easily.

Top Socialite, carrying 119, moved to the lead after a half-mile and held on stubbornly, but could not hold off the winner. Perfect Match, carrying 116, went to the lead after start and raced evenly after being passed by Top Socialite.
