Fullerton, Without Its Travel Costs Covered, Will Not Meet Miami on TV

There will be no nationally televised game at the University of Miami for the Cal State Fullerton baseball team, it was announced Tuesday.

Representatives from Fullerton’s athletic department had expressed interest in a May 18 game at Miami which had been proposed by officials from ESPN. On Monday, the Titans cleared space on their schedule by canceling Tuesday night’s nonconference game against Loyola Marymount, only to learn Tuesday afternoon that Miami balked at absorbing Fullerton’s travel costs. Miami decided instead to set up a two-game series against the University of New Orleans.

Ed Carroll, Fullerton athletic director, said: “They wanted to make some money out of the deal, and we needed to have at least a portion of our costs covered.”

Fullerton (39-14) completes its scheduled games this weekend with a three-game series against University of the Pacific. The Titans’ game against Loyola Marymount could be rescheduled as a warmup for the NCAA regional playoffs, depending on whether the Lions earn a bid. The Titans gained an automatic berth by clinching the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. championship last Saturday.
