ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASEBALL : Roundup : Barber’s Homer in Seventh Gives Anaheim Surprise Win Over Savanna

John Barber hit a two-out home run in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and give Anaheim High School a 2-1 upset of second-place Savanna Wednesday in an Orange League baseball game at La Palma Park.

Barber, a sophomore, was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. He singled home Craig Gistlinck in the second inning as Anaheim took a 1-0 lead. Savanna (7-4-1, 11-8-1) tied the score in the third on a leadoff home run by Jeff Wagner.

Robert Fernandez, a freshman right-hander, pitched a three-hitter for Anaheim (2-10, 4-17). It was his third complete game. Ken Tolbert took the loss. Anaheim also upset Western Friday, 2-0.

In other Orange League play:

Magnolia 2, Brea-Olinda 0--Marty Neff hit a solo home run in the second to lead the Sentinels (4-7-1, 7-11-1) at Brea-Olinda. Mike Tietge pitched a three-hitter for the victory and Shon Riley pitched a five-hitter to take the loss for Brea-Olinda (7-5, 8-11).

Valencia 15, Western 3--Dennis Burbank (9-2) pitched a complete game and was 3 for 3 with a three-run home run to lead the Tigers (9-3, 13-7) at home. Brett Gregory was 2 for 2 and scored four runs, Mike Edwards was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Anthony Davis was 3 for 4 with three RBIs for Valencia, which had 16 hits.

Dave Brown and Troy Babbitt hit home runs and Doug McConathy was 3 for 4 for Western (6-6, 14-8).

In Garden Grove League play:

La Quinta 5, Los Amigos 2--Sean Cronkite (1-1) pitched four innings and Frank Carrillo the last three for the Aztecs (12-0, 20-2) at home. Guillermo Alcantar was 2 for 3 and is 24 for 40 in league for La Quinta, which has already clinched first-place.

James Marquez was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Jeff Kronfly was 2 for 2 with an RBI for La Quinta. Los Amigos is 1-10-1, 2-18-1.

Santiago 5, Rancho Alamitos 4--Sean McCurry had a two-run double during a three-run sixth for the Cavaliers (5-7, 8-12) at Rancho Alamitos. McCurry also pitched a complete game. Tony Alfardo, Ricardo Gallardo and Steve Larson had two hits for Santiago.

Steve Jenkins hit a solo home run in the third for Rancho Alamitos (5-6-1, 8-12) and Craig Paquette and Kevin Webster had two hits.

Garden Grove 12, Bolsa Grande 9--The Argonauts scored seven runs in the first including two on a triple by Wade Elliot against losing pitcher Tony Beal (6-4) at Bolsa Grande. Garden Grove (6-6, 9-11) moves into a tie for second place with Bolsa Grande (6-6, 11-9).

Elliott was 4 for 4 with three RBIs and Mark Lung (3-3), who pitched six innings, also hit a solo home run.

Beal was 4 for 4 with two RBIs and Eric Schreifles was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and had a triple for Bolsa Grande.

In South Coast League play:

Mission Viejo 4, Capistrano Valley 3--Matt Lackey’s bases-loaded single in the seventh gave the Diablos (5-7, 14-7) the victory at Mission Viejo. Capistrano Valley (10-2, 19-3) had tied the score, 3-3, in the seventh and had a chance to take the lead off winning pitcher Jack Bailey (7-3). With two out, Brian Walker singled to center and teammate Chris Ashback attempted to score. But Mission Viejo’s Dwayne Lee made a strong throw to catcher Tony Arnone, who tagged out Ashback to end the inning.

Irvine 8, San Clemente 2--John Rahmatulla (5-3) pitched a five-hitter for the Vaqueros (8-4, 13-9) at Irvine. Terry Rahmatulla was 3 for 3 with an RBI and Mike Nau was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Irvine.

Marlon Bringas and Jim Enochs had two hits each for Irvine. San Clemente is 0-12, 2-17-1.

Dana Hills 4, El Toro 3--Dolphin first baseman Denny Papp drove home Craig Lombardi with a long single to right to break a 3-3 tie in the seventh at Dana Hills. Nick Gimas was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Jeff Mote (2-0) gave up two hits through last two innings for Dana Hills (8-4, 14-8-1). El Toro is 5-7, 14-9.

In Century League play:

Foothill 6, Santa Ana 4--Doug Kopcha was 2 for 3 with a triple, a double and two RBIs and Mike Horton was 2 for 3 with a triple, home run and two RBIs to lead the Knights at Foothill (6-6, 10-12). Kent Donnelly (4-3) gave up six hits in five innings.
