SDSU Title Hopes Have to Wait; Game Suspended

Darkness halted San Diego State’s Western Athletic Conference baseball game with Brigham Young Friday, with the score tied, 8-8, after six innings at Provo, Utah. The game will be resumed today at 9 a.m. (PDT), with the winner playing Hawaii for the conference title and an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.

The Aztecs lost, 17-10, to No. 13 Hawaii Friday morning, and BYU eliminated New Mexico, 22-8. SDSU defeated the Cougars, 6-1, Thursday in a first-round game of the double-elimination tournament.

SDSU, the defending conference champion, trailed BYU, 3-0, after the first but scored five in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run single from Steve Montejano. Billy Miller extended the Aztecs’ lead to 6-3 with a solo home run in the third.

But BYU took an 8-6 lead in the fifth on a two-run home run by Brad Eager and a three-run shot by Mike Willes. Willes’ home run was his 32nd of the season to lead the NCAA.

The Aztecs tied the score on RBI singles by Miller and Montejano in their half of the fifth.

Against Hawaii, SDSU led, 5-4, before Hawaii scored nine runs in the fifth inning.

Nikco Riesgo had a grand slam for SDSU.
