BRIEFLY : CSUN Names Athletes of Year

Softball player Barbara Jordan, swimmer Jeff Kubiak and football player Mike Kane have been named Athletes of the Year at Cal State Northridge.

The winners were selected by university coaches who considered athletic achievement, scholastic progress, community and campus involvement and personal traits.

Jordan, a two-time All-American and California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Most Valuable Player, is batting .363 for the Lady Matadors, who are participating in the NCAA Divison II West Regional this weekend in Sacramento. Jordan holds eight CSUN offensive records.

Kubiak, who holds three national records in the breaststroke, was named NCAA Swimmer of the Meet at each of the last two nationals.

Kane, who led the Western Football Conference in rushing (1,565 yards) and scoring (96 points), was the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year.

Bass Tournament at Lake Castaic

The West Valley Bassmasters will sponsor its 11th Team Bass Tournament today at Lake Castaic. All proceeds from the event will benefit the UCLA child amputee prosthetics project.

The tournament starts at 4 a.m. Entry fee is $45 per team with a $200 prize for the largest limit of bass and other prizes for largest fish, top man-woman team and top parent-child team. A $15,000 boat, motor and trailer will be given away following the tournament.

Racquetball Tournament Set

The American Amateur Racquetball Assn. will hold its Junior Regional Championship tournament May 15-17 a Racquet World in Canoga Park.

May 11 is the entry deadline for the tournament, which is open to men and women between the ages of 8-18.

Youth Cycling Program in Encino

Registration for the second session of the American Athletic Foundation’s Youth Cycling Program will be held Monday through Friday at the Encino Velodrome.

The four-week session will run from May 16-June 13. The program is free.

Dametra Johnson, a 5-10 forward who led Valley’s women’s basketball team in scoring this year, has signed a letter of intent with UC Riverside.

Cindy Friedman of Van Nuys has been selected to participate in the Continental Teams volleyball program, which will travel to England, Denmark, West Germany and Holland this summer.

Friedman, a junior at Notre Dame High, will leave for Europe in mid-July and will play against various local teams and compete in the Haarlem Cup International Volleyball Tournament.

Nicolas Renard and Kevin Feinbloom of Cal State Northridge have qualified as part of a 64-player singles field in the NCAA Division II tennis men’s championships at CSUN next week.
