Watts Steps Up in Class in Pepsi Meet, Joins Talented National Sprint Field

Taft High’s Quincy Watts, one of the top high school sprinters in the country, will compete against some of the nation’s top collegiate and open sprinters in today’s Pepsi Invitational at UCLA.

Watts, the defending state champion at 200 meters, will run in the 100- and 200-meter events.

The 100 field includes three-time U.S. Olympian Harvey Glance of Tyson’s Track Club and Mark Witherspoon and 1980 Olympian Stanley Floyd, both of the Santa Monica Track Club. Floyd and UCLA standout Henry Thomas will head the 200 field.

Mike Tully of Encino, the 1984 Olympic silver medalist, will compete in the pole vault. Tully, who has a personal best of 19-1, was ranked sixth in the world in 1986 by Track and Field News magazine.

Alice Brown of Panorama City, the 1984 Olympic silver medalist in the 100 meters and a member of the gold-medal winning 400-meter relay team, will compete in the women’s 200 meters. Brown, who has a personal best of 22.41, was ranked eighth in the world in the 100 meters last year.
