Murray Fan Not Crazy Over ‘Crazies’ Column
As a long-time fan of Jim Murray’s wit and writing skills, I was saddened and disappointed to see these talents turned to joking about the No. 1 drug abuse problem of our time--alcoholism--in his column on May 14.
Incredibly, Murray finds humor in the moronic antics of “The Crazies”, a group of NFL quarterbacks whose annual reunions serve primarily as an excuse to see who can get drunkest. With affection bordering closely on admiration, Murray refers to them as “ex-jocks lit by spirits in nightshirts that, like them, glow in the dark.”
Murray perceives it as virtually hilarious when the Crazies celebrate drinking to such a degree that “their motto is, whenever they meet, the moon is full--and so are they.”
How pathetic that such actions are even perpetuated, but more tragic is the spectacle of intelligent professionals like Murray finding humor in grown men drinking themselves into a stupor. The whole thing is about as funny as a drunk choking to death on his own vomit--a stunt the Crazies are evidently quite capable of adding to their repertoire.
