City Track : Dorsey’s Rolfe Is in Form

What’s that they say?: The future’s so bright, she’s got to wear shades.

That is certainly the case for Angela Rolfe, the track star at Dorsey High School in Los Angeles who has the No. 1 time in California in the 400-meter dash at 53.86 and the No. 1 time in the City in the 200 at 24.1 as a sophomore. But those black sunglasses will stay close by no matter what time of day it is. Saying it’s a trademark obviously makes it OK to wear shades outdoors at night.

“Most of the time, people wouldn’t recognize me without them,” she said.

Much longer, however, and Rolfe won’t need such a, well, unnecessary, accessory to be noticed. Her times will be plenty fashionable.

Friday evening at Birmingham High in Van Nuys, she took a big step toward two City titles, winning her heats in both the 400 (54.40) and the 200 (24.58) at the semifinals. She ended night by anchoring Dorsey’s victorious 1,600 relay team.

“I think I can get down lower,” Rolfe said of her already impressive times. “It all depends on how things work out the next two weeks.”

To be running two weeks from today is to be in Sacramento for the state finals. Wouldn’t that be chic?

For the second straight year, the boys’ portion of the meet became the Quincy Watts show, entertaining as ever.

All the Woodland Hills Taft junior did was set City-meet records in the 100 meters (10.36, bettering his own 10.56 from last season) and anchor the 400 relay team to a 40.88, topping the 41.10 set by L.A. Hamilton back in 1976. He also ran the 200 in 20.99, not far off the record of 20.90 and ran a great last leg in the 1,600 relay-winning time of 3:20.5.

In other words, business as usual for Watts.

Other notables:

--Brian Bridgewater, the L.A. Washington junior, winning his heat of the 100 in 10.63 and the 200 in 21.57.

--Dorsey’s Jason Wyatt raising his City-leading mark in the shotput to 57-3 3/4, about two feet beyond his previous best.

--Kara Olsen of San Pedro becoming the No. 1 qualifier in both the 1,600 (5:04.39) and the 3,200 (11:02.23).

The City finals will be held a week from today, also on the all-weather surface at Birmingham. The top four finishers advance to Sacramento.
