Southern Section Tennis : Briggs Only Bright Spot as Corona del Mar Loses

Corona del Mar’s Mike Briggs finished his senior season at 48-0 with a sweep of Beverly Hills’ Donny Isaac, Billy Wright and Lev Schwartz, but his were the only singles points as Corona del Mar fell to Beverly Hills, 14-4, in a Southern Section team tennis 5-A quarterfinal match at Corona del Mar.

The doubles team of Rob Atkin and Doug Schulein gave Corona del Mar its other point at Balboa Bay Club. The Sea Kings wound up their season 16-6.

In Southern Section 5-A quarterfinals:

University 13, Miraleste 5--Carlos Bustos (6-1, 6-4, 6-0) and Carsten Hoffman (6-3, 6-1, 7-6) swept their sets to defeat eighth-seeded Miraleste (11-10) at Miraleste. The Trojans improve to 21-0.

Palos Verdes 13, Newport Harbor 5--Chris Rabbitt, Newport Harbor’s No. 1 singles player, won two of his three matches, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, in an otherwise dismal outing for the Sailors (16-6). Palos Verdes, meanwhile, raised its record to 14-3.

In 4-A second-round action:

Foothill 9, Diamond Bar 9 (Foothill advances on total wins, 83-63)--The Knights, led by Dan Turbow (6-0, 6-0, 6-0) and Jeff Geisea (6-0, 6-0, 6-2), advanced at Diamond Bar. Dana Eisenman and Kent Northcoate (5-7, 2-6, 6-2) were the only doubles team to win a set for Foothill (14-5), which will play Mater Dei in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Edison 10, Long Beach Wilson 8--Brian Goldfaden, Edison’s No. 1 singles player, defeated No. 3 Kevin Whelton, 6-2, in the only singles match won by the Chargers (17-5), who swept the doubles at Edison. In another pivotal match, Edison’s No. 3 doubles team of Bob Dye and Greg Moore overcame a 3-0 deficit to win, 6-4.

Servite 15, Nogales 3--Servite’s No. 1 doubles team of Jason Chung-Mark Gothard swept three Nogales opponents, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, raising their record to 60-4 at Anaheim Tennis Center. Jeff and Chris Belloli, the Nos. 1 and 2 singles players, respectively, also swept their matches for Servite (17-3).

Mater Dei 12, El Toro 6--Monarch No. 1 singles player Dax Petersen and No. 2 singles player Dan Jenkins both swept their singles matches at Costa Mesa Tennis Club. Mater Dei (18-1) registered another sweep with its doubles team of Pat Harnett-Mike Johnson.

In 3-A second-round action:

Gahr 10, Woodbridge 8--Akita Mafhaka was the lone Gahr player to win a singles match, but his win gave Gahr (16-4) a cushion as the Gladiators defeated sixth-seeded Woodbridge at Irvine’s Lakeshore Tennis Club. Gahr swept the doubles.

Laguna Beach 12, Palm Springs 6--The Artists scored eight out of nine points in singles at Palm Springs. The Artists’ Greg Dotts and Brian Orr defeated Andy Shuber and Greg Bohme, 6-3. Shuber and Bohme were 53-1 before the loss.

Palm Springs fell to (20-2); Laguna Beach is (18-4).

Sunny Hills 10, Indio 8--In spite of losing three tiebreakers in doubles, Sunny Hills forced Indio to miss the 3-A finals for the first time in five seasons at Sunny Hills Racquet Club. Ricci DeFazio-Robert Pearson swept all three doubles matches to lead Sunny Hills (16-5).

Los Alamitos 12, Alhambra 6--Top-seeded Los Alamitos (22-0) toppled Alhambra as Empire League champion Kit Codik swept No. 1 singles play, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

In 2-A second-round action:

Valencia 14, San Luis Obispo 4--The Tigers swept all nine doubles sets and won five out of nine singles at San Luis Obispo. Minh Ai and Eric Flint won, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, and Collin Robinson and Charles Lee won, 6-1, 6-4, 6-1, and Rayn Takenaga and Gerrod Van Engen (6-4, 6-3, 7-6) for Valencia (21-1).
