STAT WATCH : West Shows Up Best Among Valley Leagues

Since the first pitch of the season, West Valley League coaches have asserted that the league was not only the City Section’s most balanced but also its best. Based on regular-season results, it’s hard to argue the point. West Valley teams won 15 of 19 (.789) games against nonleague opponents.

Canoga Park was 3-0 against nonleague opponents, and Chatsworth, which tied Canoga Park for the league championship, was 6-1. West Valley teams were 3-0 against East Valley teams and 1-0 against the Mid-Valley League.

Records and honors: Jeff Cirillo of Providence has 38 career wins, tying him for fifth on the Southern Section career list with Bob Goodyear of L.A. Lutheran (1971-73) and Frank O’Connor of Bishop Amat (1968-70). Teammate Steve Ross has scored 46 runs this season, placing him fifth on the Southern Section list. . . . Frank Charles hit his third grand slam of the season in Montclair Prep’s 18-3, first-round victory over Aquinas in the Small Schools Division playoffs. Charles’ six runs batted in give him a school-record 47.

Steve Risinger of Saugus, who was 7-1 with a 1.91 earned-run average, set a team record for winning percentage (.875). . . . Canyon’s Travis Regnolds set a school record with 121 strikeouts.

Steve Phillips of L.A. Baptist hit safely in 31 straight games (16 in 1986, 15 this season) and stole 26 of 28 bases. . . . Despite losing several key players to graduation, Hart has three sophomores who likely could form the team’s nucleus for the next two seasons. Casey Burrill batted .395 and was second in runs batted in with 25. Jason Edwards batted .352 and had 15 RBIs. Darrin Tsukashima batted .341 with 28 hits.

Tracking their progress: At the Southern Section track and field championships at Cerritos College on Saturday, Valley-area entrants won 19 events, and 37 athletes qualified for the Masters meet at Cerritos on Friday. In 1986, nine area athletes were champions and 34 individuals advanced. . . . Valley-area athletes swept the girls triple jump competition. Sharon Manship of Thousand Oaks won the 4-A (37-9 3/4), Burbank’s Marji Gilles won the 3-A (36-8 1/2), Alemany’s Lisa Gill won the 2-A (37-1) and Village Christian’s Simone Cesh won the 1-A (35-9).

Reeves roll: When Tac Tharp of North Hollywood won the City golf championship last week, it marked the third consecutive individual championship for a member of Coach Lyle Reeves’ team. Chris Barbour, now at Stanford, won the title in 1985 and 1986. . . . Westlake will send four players to the Southern Section individual golf final in Rancho Mirage on June 1. Mike and Chris Zambri, Charlie Wi and Jimmy Chang of Westlake and Jamie Nello of Newbury Park qualified from the Marmonte League. Kevin Bailey and Steve Cardarelli of Burbank and Steve Chadwick of Hart will represent the Foothill League.

Softball: Saugus pitcher Cathy Lewis had 213 strikeouts in 23 games. . . . In its past four North Valley League games, Sylmar has scored 64 runs. The streak included 19 against Birmingham on Thursday and 15 each in games against Monroe, Granada Hills and Kennedy.
