Babe Laufenberg, who played quarterback at Crespi High and Pierce College, signed a two-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs this week.

Laufenberg, who formerly played with the San Diego Chargers and Washington Redskins, was a high school All-American and All-Southern Section selection as a senior at Crespi in 1977. Laufenberg holds the school’s career-passing record with 2,678 yards.

Jericho Gonzales of Van Nuys won the Los Angeles City Women’s Golf championship last week at the Sepulveda Golf Course. Gonzales shot 223 over 154 holes, finishing three strokes ahead of Peggy Hogan of Santa Barbara. Francine Epstein of Sepulveda finished third (228).

Point leader Dave Phipps of Simi Valley is included in a field of drivers entered in NASCAR Sportsman Class competition tonight at the Saugus Speedway.

Sportsman drivers will compete in a 40-lap feature event, and stock car drivers will participate in 25-lap oval and 15-lap Figure-8 events. Qualifying for the stock and sportsman class begins at 4 p.m. Trophy dash racing starts at 7 p.m.

In last Saturday’s competition, Bill McLean of Canoga Park won the 20-lap oval and 15-lap figure-eight races in the hobby stock class. McLean also finished first in a hobby trophy dash. In the Saugus 100 stock car event, Ron Hornaday Jr. of Palmdale defeated fast-time qualifier Ray Hooper Jr. of Valencia, who finished third. Bob Lyon of Newhall won a stock trophy dash.

Steve Carolan, a three-sport athlete, and Anna Howald, captain of the girls track team, were awarded the Jim and Ellen Ulmer Award for athletic excellence at Rio Mesa High’s spring banquet.

Others honored as most valuable players included Art Espinoza (baseball), Travis Cooksey (boys track), Roland Zschiegner (boys swimming), Michelle Holmquist (girls swimming), Derek Kawai (boys volleyball), Lani Ringor (softball), Angela Burnham (girls track), Rick Irwin (golf), and Cid Camacho (tennis).

Espinoza batted .407 as a shortstop on the Spartan baseball team, which finished 12-11 under first-year Coach Rich Duran. Cooksey won the 800-meter event last Friday in the Master’s Meet at Cerritos College with a career-best 1:52.05, the best high school mark in the state this season. Cooksey, a junior, is competing in the state championship meet in Sacramento today.
