The Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks Department is sponsoring free golf lessons for youths under the age of 18. Local professionals will conduct the clinics at both the Sepulveda and Hansen Dam golf courses on June 23-25. The clinics run from 10 a.m. to noon.

“The program allows youngsters who might not normally take up golf because of the cost a chance to enjoy the game,” Hansen Dam pro Jim Anderson said.

Instruction will focus on golf etiquette and rules along with demonstrations on the use of various clubs. Juniors are asked to furnish their own clubs and to rent a basket of driving range practice balls.

Although the 1987 high school track season just concluded, Melissa Sutton of Newbury Park and Doug Fairman of Thousand Oaks will compete in the National High School All-American Cross-Country Championships in New Orleans on Tuesday.

The championship, which will include many of the best seniors in the country, will be run on a 5,000-meter course.

Sutton won an unprecedented third straight Southern Section 4-A cross-country title in November and placed sixth in this year’s state track championship at 1,600 meters. Sutton will attend UCLA in the fall.
