For some members of the Westlake High golf team, “catching a flyer” will soon take on a whole new meaning.
After Chris Zambri, Jimmy Chang and Charlie Wi compete Monday through Wednesday in the Southern California Junior Championship at Industry Hills, it will be time to grab the golf bag, suitcase and a sleeve of balls as the three hit the road to participate in several national junior tournaments.
The trio, which helped Westlake to its second straight Southern Section title and its first Southern California high school championship, will play in the Midwestern Junior Championship on July 6-7. Chang and Zambri will play in a junior event in Georgia later in July.
“Playing in these tourneys makes us that much better during the school year,” Zambri said. “It makes those dual matches seem easier.”
Add Westlake: James Kim, a 1986 Westlake graduate who now plays for USC, advanced to the second round of match play Thursday in the California State Amateur Tournament at Pebble Beach.
Kim defeated Jeff Burda of Modesto, 1 up. In other matches, Mitch Voges of Simi Valley defeated Greg Starkman of Beverly Hills, 3 and 1. Mike Chapman of Seaside defeated Cal State Northridge senior Wayne Tyni of Van Nuys, 2 and 1. Dave Sheff of San Marino defeated Richard Greenwood of Encino, 2 up.
