11 UCLA, 6 USC Recruits to Play in Shrine Football Game Aug. 1

For the second consecutive year, UCLA, with 11, will have the most recruits of any college among the 60 players in the 36th Shrine high school all-star football game Aug. 1 at the Rose Bowl.

The Bruins also had 11 last season, with nine of those coming from the South and two from the North. This year, seven are from the South and four from the North.

UCLA’s 1987 representatives are defensive linemen Scott Spalding of El Toro and Andre Farr from Richmond Kennedy, quarterback Jim Bonds of Newhall Hart, offensive linemen Jeff Bailey of Fullerton and Brian Kelly of South Torrance, wide receiver Paul Richardson of L.A. University, running back Kevin Smith of Oakland Skyline, linebackers Sean Howard of Encino Crespi, Mick Thomas of Garces Memorial and Patrick McPherson of San Jose Bellarmine, and defensive back Dion Lambert of Granada Hills Kennedy.

USC and Stanford each have six recruits in the game, followed by Brigham Young with three (the most of any out-of-state school) and Fresno State and Oregon with two each.

The Trojans’ signees are offensive linemen Steve Mills of San Jose Bellarmine and Michael Moody of San Francisco Washington, tight end Frank Griffin of Rancho Cordova, linebacker Scott Ross of El Toro, defensive lineman Pat Harlow of Norco and defensive back Marcus Hopkins of San Diego Lincoln.
