Ethnic Bonds Called Key to Latino Family
Latino families must strengthen their ethnic bonds or risk being torn apart by the pressures of American culture, the president of one of the nation’s largest Latino organizations said Sunday.
Teen-age ignorance about birth control, increasing divorce rates and American schools that pit Latino children against their Spanish-speaking parents are crumbling the cultural pillars that once held the Latino community together, said Raul Yzaguirre, president of the National Council of La Raza.
The future of the Latino family is the theme of this year’s 11th annual conference of La Raza, a privately financed organization that serves as an umbrella for Latino community groups, Yzaguirre said.
More than 3,500 Latino community and business leaders were expected at the four-day meeting, which began Sunday, spokeswoman Debra Schiebel said.
More than 100 exhibits by merchants and government agencies were planned at the conference, along with a computerized job bank, Schiebel said.
