Taft High seniors Su San Chan and Geoffrey Applebaum were named winners of the first student athletic achievement awards, given to graduating student-athletes with the highest grade-point average.

Chan, who was a member of the school’s varsity softball team while maintaining a 4.0 GPA, and will enroll at USC in the fall. She will major in engineering. Applebaum, who participated in track and football while maintaining a 3.9 GPA, will attend UC Berkeley.

Bill Redell, the Crespi High football coach, has been named an assistant to the president at Cal Lutheran University.

Redell, who served as a fund-raiser in the CLU athletic department prior to the appointment, will work with President Jerry Miller on developing a marketing program and increasing the visibility through the school’s university relations office.

A 1963 graduate of Occidental College, Redell coached Crespi to the Big Five Conference title last year. He also was an All-Pro quarterback in the Canadian Football League in the mid-1960s.

Dolly Jaramillo, a transfer from California Collegiate Athletic Assn. rival UC Riverside, will be one of 11 new players added to the Cal State Northridge softball roster. Jaramillo, a senior, will be used as a utility player.

Seven high school and three community college recruits have also either signed or verbally committed with Coach Gary Torgeson. Karen Noble, a first baseman from Moorpark, Pam Smith, a first baseman from San Diego Mesa, and Sandy Ortiz, an outfielder from Rancho Santiago are the JC transfers. The high school recruits are Michelle Blaha, an outfielder from City champion Sylmar; Kate Bennitt, a pitcher from Del Campo, Sacramento; Anna Baumberger, a catcher from Bella Vista, Sacramento; Debbie Tateyama, a second baseman from Sunny Hills; Dawn McClary, an outfielder from Granada Hills; Suzette Braheem, an outfielder from San Pedro; and Laura McConnachie, a shortstop from St. Bernards.
