Sports Briefs : Whittier YMCA Has Golf, Tennis Tourney

The 20th annual Whittier YMCA Golf and Tennis Tournament is scheduled Monday. All proceeds will benefit Whittier YMCA programs. The tennis tournament will be held at Friendly Hills Country Club, with registration at 8:30 a.m. and play beginning at 9. The $50 entry fee includes court, balls, awards, dinner, table favors and door prizes.

The golf tournament begins at 12:30 p.m. at the California Country Club. It will have a scramble format and a shotgun start. Sports, media and entertainment celebrities will participate. The $100 entry fee includes greens fees, cart, locker, awards, prime rib dinner, table favors and door prizes. For information, call Kit Wilson or Brad Bennett at (213) 698-0184.

Steelers Sign Long Beach State’s Lockett

Charles Lockett, former wide receiver for Cal State University, Long Beach, has signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Lockett, who caught 191 passes in his CSULB career, was the Steelers’ third-round choice in this year’s National Football League draft.

Bellflower High Wrestling Coach Named

James Smoots, a graduate of Biola University in La Mirada, has been appointed wrestling coach at Bellflower High School. A three-year starter at Biola, he finished third and fifth in NCAA Championship finals.

Poly’s Russell to Play in Shrine Game

Leonard Russell, a running back from Poly High School in Long Beach, will play for the South in the 36th annual Shrine All-Star Football Classic at 7 p.m. Aug. 1 in the Rose Bowl. Russell, who gained 1,294 yards and scored 19 touchdowns as a Poly senior, will play this fall for Arizona State.

Long Beach UCLA Boosters To Meet

The Long Beach Bruins, a UCLA booster club, will hold a kickoff party between 1 and 4 p.m. Aug. 15 at the 555 East Restaurant, 555 E. Ocean Blvd. UCLA football players and cheerleaders will attend. For more information, call (213) 429-6527.

Cerritos College Golf Classic Set

The Cerritos College Foundation Golf Classic will be played Aug. 31 at Candlewood Country Club in Whittier. Sportscaster Ted Dawson will speak at the awards dinner following the tournament. The cost per golfer is $100. For advance information, call (213) 860-2451, ext. 536.

Muscle Building Contest in Commerce

The fifth annual Commerce Muscle Classic is scheduled for 2 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Hyatt hotel, 6300 Telegraph Road, Commerce. Contestants will compete in the categories of teen-age, men’s lightweight, men’s middleweight, mixed pairs and women. Trophies will be awarded for best poser, most muscular and overall winner as well as first, second and third places in each category. The contest is open to Commerce residents or employees of businesses in the city.

Bonvicini To Hold Basketball Camp

Openings are still available for a basketball camp directed by Cal State Long Beach women’s Coach Joan Bonvicini. The camp will be held Aug. 9 to 14 at CSULB. Various high school and college coaches will be instructors, including Bonvicini and her assistants, Michael Abraham and Glenn McDonald. Over-the-Line Tournament on the Beach

The fourth annual U.S. Open Beach Over-the-Line Tournament will be played Aug. 1 and 2 at Bayshore Avenue and Ocean Boulevard in Belmont Shore.
