Firefighters fought a 10-acre brush fire in rugged Coal Canyon. The California Highway Patrol closed all eastbound lanes on the Riverside Freeway for an hour because thick smoke cut visibility. Firefighting agencies took an hour to bring the blaze under control at 4:40 p.m., said Capt. Patrick McIntosh of the County Fire Department. No structures were threatened. No injuries were reported. Eighty-six fire fighters fought the fire while an air tanker dropped fire retardant.
