Bob Burns of Simi Valley finished in a tie for fourth in the Los Angeles County Amateur golf tournament last weekend at the Knollwood Country Club in Granada Hills with an even-par 216.

Dave Berganio, a senior at Alemany High, finished in a three-way tie for ninth.

Berganio, who starts for the school basketball and golf teams, finished with a 3-over-par 219 in the 54-hole event, eight shots behind Mark Burke of Los Angeles. Tony Chieffo, a senior at Cal State Northridge, and Jim Rouse of Canyon Country also finished at 219.

Dave Blankenship of Reseda scored a double victory last Friday night at the Saugus Speedway, winning both the 25-lap hobby stock oval and figure-eight races.

The oval feature victory was Blankenship’s first of the season, though he has won six of eight figure-eight main events.

Bill McLean of Canoga Park, who recorded the fastest time in hobby stock class, finished second in both events.

Dain Turner, a Times All-Valley outfielder who batted .430 for Kennedy High this season, will attend Sinclair College in his hometown of Dayton, Ohio.

The team of Tim Kossow, Dale Hoff, Paul Hertog, Sue Seapara and Cherin Eggars, all of Granada Hills, won $1,100 and other prizes for a sixth-place finish in the Brunswick Recreation Center Pinbuster bowling tournament last month.

Newbury Park High rallied from a spot in the losers’ bracket to defeat Royal twice, winning the Newbury Park Volleyball Summer League tournament last week.

Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks will participate in the Western National Prep Championship tournament at Cal State Long Beach on Aug. 22-23.
