ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Perone’s Field Goal Lifts San Clemente to 9-6 Win

Tino Perone’s 26-yard field goal with 3:17 left gave San Clemente High School a 9-6 victory over Corona del Mar Friday on Davidson Field at Newport Harbor.

The 5-foot 6-inch Perone’s kick also gave the Tritons their first win of the season, and the initial victory for Dave Elecciri as a head coach.

San Clemente lost its season opener last week to Woodbridge, 34-7. Corona del Mar fell to 0-2, having lost last week to Huntington Beach, 27-7.

Senior quarterback Doug Dill was 11 for 18 for 129 yards, and fullback Fred Walke led Triton runners with 73 yards in 15 carries.

Corona del Mar scored first on an 11-yard pass from quarterback Kurt Ehmann to halfback Sean Woolsey with 5:33 left in the first quarter. The extra-point kick was wide.

Dill’s seven-yard run with 7:18 left in the half tied the score, but his extra-point pass was broken up and the score was tied at halftime, 6-6.

With 8:53 remaining, the Tritons took over on their 43, taking 11 plays to set up Perone’s game-winning field goal.
