HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : La Reina Girls Tennis Team Passes an Early Test

Although it is early in the season, Friday’s nonleague tennis match between La Reina and Pasadena Poly wasn’t taken lightly by La Reina Coach Leif Jonassen.

“This match was important for us,” Jonassen said. “We always play Pasadena early in the season. It’s a good test to see where we are.”

La Reina passed the exam with flying colors in a 12-6 victory.

La Reina, the No. 1-ranked team in the Southern Section 1-A Division, won eight of the nine singles matches to put fourth-ranked Pasadena Poly away early.

Sophomore Katie Glynn, La Reina’s No. 1 singles player, swept her three sets, defeating Mary Nasser, 6-4; Ashley Fong, 6-2; and Jennifer Ryan, 6-0. Freshman teammate Carrie Johnson, the Regents’ No. 3 player did likewise, defeating Nasser, 6-4; Fong, 6-2; and Ryan, 6-4.

“Katie and Carrie both played very well,” Jonassen said. “Carrie is really starting to come on. She looks real strong.”

Amy Saffire and Mari Jonassen and sisters Erin and Keri Sweeney each won two of three doubles sets for La Reina (3-2).

The Regents’ two losses have come to Chaminade, the top-ranked team in the 2-A, and Thousand Oaks, the fifth-ranked team in the 3-A.

Chaminade 12, Marymount 6--Abigail Villena and Sarah Eipe, Chaminade’s top singles players, each swept three sets to lead Chaminade to the nonleague win at the Northridge Tennis Club.

WATER POLO

Westlake 14, Nordhoff 11--Senior Rusty Rudolph scored five goals to help Westlake advance to the winners’ bracket in the Calabasas tournament.

Westlake’s Rob Douglas scored four goals and had four assists and Steve Lai added four goals. Goalie Chris Jahng had 14 saves for Westlake (1-2).

Harvard 13, Downey 10--Damon Willick scored three goals to lead Harvard’s victory in the Millikan tournament. Harvard (3-1), which lost earlier to Long Beach Poly, 6-5, advanced to the winners’ bracket with the win.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Village Christian def. Holy Family, 15-4, 15-12, 15-10--Karin Yoho had nine kills and six blocks, and Heather Hepburn added six kills and served three aces to lead Village Christian (7-0).
