ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Spence’s Two Scores Pace Capo Valley

Running back Matt Spence scored two touchdowns in the last quarter to lead Capistrano Valley High School to a 22-7 victory over Corona del Mar Friday night in front of 2,500 fans in the Cougars’ stadium.

Capistrano Valley was plagued by penalties and mistakes in a scoreless first half against a team that has yet to win a game this season. Capistrano Valley scored in the third quarter on a three-yard pass from quarterback Todd Marinovich to wide receiver Joe Wood to take a 7-0 lead.

Corona del Mar tied the score, 7-7, on a one-yard run by fullback Matt Patterson with 1:08 left in the third quarter. The play was set up by an interception by back Chris Kehrli at the Cougar 25-yard line that he returned to the Cougar seven.

Capistrano Valley took the lead for good on a 16-yard run by Spence with 5:51 remaining in the game, and then Spence added a 48-yard scoring run with 51 seconds left. Spence finished with 128 yards in 14 carries, and Marinovich was 12 of 27 for 186 yards and 2 interceptions.
