HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Dameworth and Drosin Race to Easy Victories

Bryan Dameworth and Deena Drosin of Agoura High took advantage of familiar surroundings Saturday to win the small schools divisions of the Paramount Ranch Cross-Country Classic on their home course, turning in the fastest times in the boys and girls events.

Dameworth, who placed third in last year’s Southern Section 2-A championships as a freshman, clocked 15 minutes, 44.9 seconds over the three-mile course to remain undefeated.

Teammates Peter Oviatt and Derek Kite placed second (16:20.5) and fourth (17:10.2) as the Chargers won the team title with 23 points. La Canada (35) and Chaminade (96) placed second and third.

Drosin, a freshman, also remained undefeated with her 18:02.3 clocking. Her closest pursuer was freshman teammate Tiffany York, who placed second in 19:28.7.

Agoura easily won the team title with 22 points. La Canada (54) and Alemany (61) rounded out the top three.

In the large schools division, Mike Esparza and Amy Nesbitt of Newbury Park cruised to easy wins. Esparza, who placed third in last year’s Southern Section 4-A championships, ran 16:30.5 and Nesbitt ran 19:43.7.

Newbury Park placed second in the boys race with 51 points, nine behind Buena (42); and the Panthers won the girls title with 34 points, 11 ahead of runner-up Buena.

BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY

Canyon, 25, Antelope Valley 30; Canyon 23, Burroughs (Ridgecrest) 37; Canyon 20, Saugus 40--Mike Rattary and Dave Hartman of Canyon placed first and second in the Golden League triple-dual meet at College of the Canyons as the Cowboys upset Antelope Valley, the fifth-ranked team in the Southern Section’s 4-A Division.

Rattary set a course record of 16:04 over the three-mile distance, while freshman Hartman clocked 16:28.
