Sunny Hills High School won another football game Thursday night--a 23-0 romp over Brea-Olinda in front of 1,000 on Spaulding Field at Buena Park High.

It was another example of the Lancers’ ability to work over their opposition with seemingly little effort or fanfare.

It appeared that the Lancers (5-0) could have beaten the Wildcats in an even more convincing fashion if they had chosen to, but they settled for an adequate performance in their final nonleague game.

Senior David Chisum, Orange County’s top-rated quarterback, threw for 122 yards, below his average of 164 yards per game, but it certainly sufficed.

He completed 5 of 8 attempts, with touchdown passes of 27 and 60 yards.

Bryan Edmunds, a senior fullback, bulled and barreled his way for 91 yards and a touchdown in 16 carries to lead the Sunny Hills rushing game. The Lancer defense intercepted sophomore Chad Marlow--starting his second game in place of injured senior Shon Riley--three times to record their third shutout of the season.

Marlow was 10 of 21 for 78 yards as Brea fell to 2-3.

“They have the county’s leading passer (Chisum),” Brea Coach Bill Brown said when asked how to stop Sunny Hills. “They have a fullback (Edmunds) who runs hard at people and they’ve only given up 12 points all year. You tell me. Where do you start?”

The biggest question of the night was not whether Sunny Hills would win. Edmunds took care of that, scoring on a two-yard run up the middle to give the Lancers the only points they would need with 9:48 left in the half.

The question was whether Mike McGuire, a senior receiver, plucked a Chisum pass before it hit the turf or whether it bounced in front of him. The ball appeared to hit the ground just before McGuire caught it at the Wildcat 15, but the officials ruled otherwise and McGuire turned the play into a 27-yard touchdown reception that gave the Lancers a 13-0 lead with 3:36 left in the half.

“He caught the ball,” Tim Devaney, Lancer coach, said. “I had a good angle. He’s got great hands.”
