COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Southland Roundup : Santa Barbara Comeback Defeats St. Mary’s, 16-13

Reserve quarterback Mike Curtius threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Sean Russell with 3:33 remaining as UC Santa Barbara, a Division III team, defeated Division II St. Mary’s, 16-13, Saturday in a nonconference game at Moraga, Calif.

Curtius, playing in place of Paul Wright, who injured his shoulder early in the fourth quarter, led the Gauchos (4-1) on a 9-play, 89-yard scoring drive that enabled Santa Barbara to overcome a 13-9 deficit.

Before the touchdown, the Gauchos’ offense consisted of three field goals by John Corrigan. Corrigan tied his single-game school mark with three field goals, and set a school record with a 47-yard kick in the third quarter.

Ken Smith rushed for 112 yards in 23 carries for Santa Barbara, which won despite losing four fumbles to St. Mary’s (3-2).

La Verne 41, Pomona-Pitzer 6--Quarterback Mark Brown completed 12 of 19 passes for 225 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Leopards to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at La Verne.

Brian Ninde caught 6 passes for 116 yards, including a 30-yard scoring reception in the final quarter.

Keristen Lamb rushed for 102 yards and 1 touchdown in 19 carries for La Verne (1-1, 1-3).

Cal Poly SLO 40, CS Hayward 14--The undefeated Mustangs of San Luis Obispo, the 13th-ranked Division II school in the nation, rallied from an early 7-0 deficit and won easily in a nonconference game at Hayward.

After Earl Butler intercepted a Tom Sullivan pass on the second play from scrimmage and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown to give Hayward (0-5) a quick lead, San Luis Obispo (5-0) came back with three straight touchdowns before the quarter was over.

Halfback Cornell Williams rushed for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Mustangs, and fullback Alan Survia ran for 88 yards and 2 touchdowns in 18 carries.

Menlo 28, Redlands 3--The passing and rushing of quarterback Jerold Montano helped lead Menlo (4-1) to the nonconference victory over Redlands (1-3) at Menlo.

Montano completed 14 of 24 passes for 185 yards and 2 touchdowns and rushed for 54 yards in 6 carries.

Azusa Pacific 23, U. of San Diego 18--Marvin Walker scored two second-half touchdowns to lead Azusa Pacific (2-3) to the nonconference victory over the Toreros (3-1-1) at San Diego. San Diego had won three straight, all by shutout.

Claremont-Mudd 21, Whittier 14--Running back Chris Dabrow rushed for 151 yards and 1 touchdown in 37 carries and quarterback Mike Pembroke rushed for 131 yards and 1 touchdown in 12 carries to lead the Stags (3-0. 3-1) past the Poets (0-1, 2-3) in the SCIAC game at Whittier.

CS Northridge 36, Cal Lutheran 14--The Matadors (1-0, 4-1) rushed for 334 yards and routed the Kingsmen (0-3, 2-3) in a Western Football Conference game at Northridge.
