Orange County College Roundup : UCI Edges Pepperdine in Water Polo

Greg Wilson scored with one second remaining in overtime to lift UC Irvine to an 11-10 victory over Pepperdine in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. water polo match Sunday at Newport Harbor High School.

Irvine, ranked fourth in the nation, rallied from a 6-1 halftime deficit to cut the Waves’ lead to 8-5 by the end of the third quarter. Irvine continued its rally, tying the score at 8-8 with two minutes remaining in regulation.

Rafael Gandarillas scored to give eighth-ranked Pepperdine a 9-8 lead with 1:53 remaining, but Anteater Julian Harvey came back with a goal 17 seconds later to tie the score at 9-9 and send it into overtime.

Neither team scored in the first three-minute overtime period, but Gandarillas and Irvine’s Mike Doting each scored in the first two minutes of the second overtime to tie the score, 10-10. Wilson shot the game-winning goal for Irvine from 15-feet, without an assist.

Doting led Irvine (3-0, 8-4) with four goals and Wilson had three. Gandarillas led the Waves (4-2, 11-8) with four goals.

In PCAA men’s soccer:

UC Irvine 1, Cal State Fullerton 0 (overtime)--Mike Perisi scored with 14 seconds remaining in overtime to lead the Anteaters (2-3, 4-7) at Irvine.

Perisi, a junior, and former standout at Corona del Mar High, scored from five feet out off a shot that had deflected off the goalkeeper’s chest.

Irvine goalkeeper Mike Gartlan tied a school record with 12 saves, and goalkeeper Bryan Fisher had 12 saves for Fullerton (1-3, 7-6).
