Cook, Former Expo GM, Gets Same Job With Reds
Murray Cook, former general manager of the Montreal Expos, was named to an identical position with the Cincinnati Reds, it was announced Tuesday night.
Bill Bergesch, the former Reds’ general manager, was told of his firing Sunday night by an attorney for majority owner Marge Schott.
The announcement of the front office change was made in Tampa, Fla., where an organizational meeting was being held.
Cook, 46, previously worked in the New York Yankees organization with Bergesch, who came to Cincinnati three years ago after serving as vice president of baseball operations for the Yankees.
Cook was the Expos’ general manager from Sept. 5, 1984 until he resigned last Aug. 11.
Bergesch was criticized for choosing not to trade the club’s young stars for pitching while the San Francisco Giants made several major deals on their way to overtaking the Reds and winning the National League West.
