Carson 42, Granada Hills 14--The undefeated Colts (4-0), The Times’ No. 1 City team, scored three touchdowns in a 3:59 span in the second quarter to break a scoreless tie and went on to rout the No. 3 Highlanders (2-2) in a nonleague game at Granada Hills. Defensive back Charles Gardner recovered a fumble and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown to give Carson a 7-0 lead. Linebacker Rick Tiedemann returned an interception 31 yards to make it 14-0, and a 4-yard scoring run by George Malauulu made it 21-0. In the first half, Carson limited Granada Hills to 1 yard total offense. Malauulu later had a 41-yard touchdown run and finished with 68 yards in 5 carries.

Granada Hills quarterback Jeremy Leach completed 21 of 42 passes for 223 yards and 2 touchdowns, the only points Carson has allowed this year. However, Leach was sacked 9 times for losses totaling 86 yards.

Palisades 23, Kennedy 20--Junior Perry Klein of Palisades, the City’s leading passer, completed 17 of 28 passes for 205 yards and Harold Champion had 6 receptions for 113 yards and 1 touchdown in the nonleague game at Kennedy High. Kennedy was paced by Ron Hardy, who gained 184 yards and scored twice in 25 carries. Trailing, 23-20, Kennedy drove to the Palisades 4-yard line but, on a fourth and 3, Hardy was dropped for a 2-yard loss.

Locke 26, Fairfax 13--Locke’s Darian Hagan, alternating between quarterback and running back, rushed for 122 yards in 11 carries, and passed for 143 yards and 3 touchdowns in the nonleague game at Fairfax. Hagan completed 7 of 9 passes and had 1 interception. Leroy Ganaway had three receptions for Locke including an 82-yard touchdown and also scored on a 13-yard run. Locke, The Times’ No. 7 ranked team, is 3-1. Fairfax is 0-4.

Canoga Park 20, Hamilton 0--Mike Conover rushed for a game-high 87 yards and scored twice to lead Canoga Park (3-1) to a nonleague win at Hamilton. Conover also had fourth-quarter field goals of 40 and 41 yards. Peter Marine switched from wide receiver to quarterback, replacing his injured brother, Del, gained 54 yards in 11 carries for Canoga Park. Hamilton (0-4) was paced by Travis Moore, who completed 5 of 18 passes for 50 yards and was intercepted twice.

Birmingham 37, Narbonne 20--Jason Moore scored on a 10-yard run to break a 10-10 tie and ignite a 21-point third-quarter outburst by Birmingham in a nonleague game at Narbonne. Ricky Martin then scored on a 4-yard run, and Moore had a 35-yard touchdown pass play from Alan Sedacca, who finished with 12 of 20 completions for 235 yards and 3 touchdowns. Birmingham running back Marcel Sellers, the third-leading rusher in the City with 438 yards, suffered a broken shoulder in the first quarter and will probably be lost for the rest of the season. Narbonne’s Warren Roberts gained 129 yards in 11 carries and had 3 receptions for 104 yards and 3 touchdowns.

University 7, North Hollywood 3--Ron Edwards scored the winning points on a 6-yard pass from Craig Perry with 9:49 remaining in the Pac-8 League game at University. Later in the fourth quarter, North Hollywood drove into University territory, but Edward intercepted a James Crump pass at the University 14 with 3:23 left. North Hollywood got its only points in the third quarter on a 21-yard field goal by Chris Thomas after North Hollywood (2-2, 0-2) had held the Warriors (3-1, 2-0) inside the 5-yard line on 3 consecutive plays. Crump finished with just 7 of 19 completions for 136 yards and had 4 passes intercepted. North Hollywood’s Chip Grant, the City’s leading rusher with 823 yards, played sparingly due to a sprained ankle and gained just 9 yards in 6 carries.

Grant 2, Sylmar 0--With 58 seconds remaining, Sylmar center Chris Herrera snapped the ball over the head of punter Shawn Alshire for a safety and the only score in the Pac-8 League game at Grant. The Sylmar defense had shut down Grant’s offense, limiting Jerome Casey to just 22 yards in 11 carries and holding Rick Negrete to 15 yards passing (2 of 7) and sacking him 5 times for a minus 39 yards. Sylmar is 1-1 in league, and 2-1-1 overall; Grant is 1-1, 2-2.

Southern Section Eisenhower 21, Riverside Poly 10--The undefeated Eagles, The Times’ No. 3-ranked team, overcame a 3-0 halftime deficit and five turnovers to defeat the Bears in a Citrus Belt League game at Eisenhower. Eisenhower (3-0, 6-0) was led by Dennis Collier, who rushed for 234 yards and 2 touchdowns in 27 carries. In six games, Collier has rushed for 999 yards in 103 carries for a 9.8 average. Darry McChristian added 105 yards in 14 carries for the Eagles, who had 390 yards rushing. Riverside Poly is 1-2, 1-4-1.

Santa Monica 54, Inglewood 14--Glyn Milburn rushed for 256 yards and 4 touchdowns in 28 carries to lead the Vikings (1-0, 5-0), The Times No. 11 team, to an easy victory over the Sentinels (0-1, 1-5) in an Ocean League opener at Santa Monica College. Milburn, the Southern Section’s leading rusher, played only about 20 minutes overall and came out of the game for good with 6:23 left in the third quarter. In five games, Milburn has gained 1,319 yards in 158 carries and scored 21 touchdowns. Santa Monica quarterback Steve Mako threw touchdown passes for 52 yards to Chris Pickett and 38 yards to Tate Nelson.

Claremont 16, Damien 7--The running game was the deciding factor in this Baseline league contest at Upland High. The Claremont duo of Scott James and Antonio Clay combined for 212 yards. James had 98 yards in 9 carries, and Clay accounted for 114 yards in 10 carries. The Claremont defense limited Damien to a minus 6 yards rushing. Kenny Allen add field goals of 33, 27 and 48 yards for the Wolfpack. Claremont got its only touchdown on Baraka Harper’s 2-yard keeper in the first quarter. Damien’s only touchdown came in the second quarter, when Randy Farris blocked a field goal attempt and returned it 72 yards. Claremont is 3-0 in league and 6-0 overall; Damien is 2-1 and 3-3.

Los Altos 21, Nogales 10--Owen McIntosh gained 65 yards in 18 carries and scored three times on 1-yard runs for Los Altos in the Sierra League game at Nogales. The Conquerors held Nogales to just 38 yards rushing in 22 carries. Nogales’ Roman Chavira completed 5 of 9 for 93 yards including a 79-yards touchdown pass play to Pete Rodriguez. The Los Altos defense was led by Andy Jauregui and Scott Mahaffey, who each had 8 tackles. Los Altos is 1-0 in league and 5-1 overall. Nogales is 0-1, 5-1.

Victor Valley 27, Barstow 6--The Jackrabbits limited Barstow to 32 total yards--only 5 yards rushing--in the San Andreas League game at Barstow. Vince Holloway rushed only twice but gained 84 yards, 80 on a touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Dion Morrow returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter for the Jackrabbits, and quarterback Jerry Dunn threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Craig Bivens in the first quarter. Victor Valley is 3-0 in league and 4-2 overall. Barstow is 1-2, 3-3.

Bishop Amat 41, St. Bernard 24--The Lancers had little trouble with the visiting Norsemen as they improved their overall record to 6-0 in the Angelus League opener for both teams. Lancer running back Mazio Royster gained 145 yards in 20 carries and scored on runs of 18 and 3 yards, and Adam Rogers carried 11 times for 69 yards and 1 touchdown. Bishop Amat outgained St. Bernard, 307 yards to 231. St. Bernard is 3-3.

Bell Gardens 22, Pioneer 8--The Lancers converted two Pioneer turnovers into touchdowns and won the Whitmont League game played before a crowd of 5,000 at Bell Gardens. George Fimbres threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to Mike Gilliam to help Bell Gardens improve its league record to 3-0 and overall record to 5-1. Pioneer, which had five turnovers overall, is 1-2, 2-4.

Crespi 56, St. Francis 27--Junior Russell White rushed for 238 yards, had touchdown runs of 28, 56, 40 and 10 yards, caught touchdown passes of 59 and 32 yards in the Del Rey League game at Crespi. In six games, White has totaled 1,119 yards and scored 20 touchdowns. Crespi, The Times’ No. 2 ranked team, has scored 55, 44, 56 and 56 points in its last four games. J.J. Lasley also had two touchdowns for Crespi on kickoff returns of 83 and 95 yards. Crespi is 1-0 in league, 5-0-1 overall. St. Francis is 0-1, 1-5.

Westlake 7, Thousand Oaks 6--Bob Grandpre threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Keith Burke and Garrett Messner added the extra point with 43 seconds left in the second quarter to give the Warriors the lead over the previously undefeated Lancers in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks. Earlier, Sean Cheevers made field goals of 20 and 25 yards to give Thousand Oaks a 6-0 lead. The closest either team came to scoring in the second half was when Thousand Oaks blocked a Warrior punt in the third quarter and recovered on the Westlake 23. Westlake held, however, and Cheevers missed a 33-yard field goal.
