COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Santos: 40 of 60, 536 Yards, 5 TDs in Loss to Stanford

San Diego State quarterback Todd Santos completed 40 of 60 passes for 536 yards and 5 touchdowns, but the Aztecs were defeated by Stanford, 44-40, Saturday night in a nonconference game.

Jeff James caught two touchdown passes and Jon Volpe ran for two scores to lead Stanford.

Santos led San Diego State to 20 points in the fourth quarter in a rally that fell short. The Aztecs drove to the Cardinal 17-yard line, but time expired on an incomplete pass into the end zone.

Stanford is 2-4, San Diego State is 1-6.

Santos has 60 career touchdown passes, breaking Dennis Shaw’s school record of 58. His yardage total moved him into fifth place on the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. all-time passing yardage list.

James, who caught 6 passes for 154 yards, caught touchdown passes of 45 and 66 yards from Brian Johnson in the first half, as Stanford jumped to a 20-0 lead.

After the Aztecs pulled to within 20-13 by halftime, Volpe scored on a 3-yard run and a 2-yard run in the second half as Stanford took a 41-20 lead in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.
