COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Southland Roundup : Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Rallies to Defeat CS Northridge, 21-20

Tailback Allen Survia scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 11th-ranked in Division II, rallied from a 20-7 third-quarter deficit to beat Cal State Northridge, 21-20, in a Western Football Conference game Saturday night at San Luis Obispo.

More than 6,000 fans at Mustang Stadium watched as Cal Poly quarterback Tom Sullivan completed 20 of 31 passes for 324 yards--175 of those to wide receiver Lance Martin in 8 catches--and set up the touchdowns of Survia, who rushed for 85 yards in the second half.

Northridge led, 20-7, after Albert Fann’s 4-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, Survia scored on a 2-yard run, and on the Mustangs’ next possession, scored on a 25-yard sweep around left end to give Cal Poly the win.

San Luis Obispo is 6-0, 2-0 in conference. Northridge drops to 4-2 and 1-1.

Occidental 31, Azusa Pacific 24--Quarterback Mark Krajnik faked a handoff with 15 seconds remaining and sprinted for a six-yard touchdown run to lift the Tigers to a nonconference victory at Azusa Pacific. Tailback George Conahey scored on a 70-yard run and Kevin Vargas on a 2-yard run for Occidental, erasing a 21-10 third-quarter deficit.

Menlo 13, Claremont-Mudd 9--The Oaks rallied from a 9-0 halftime deficit behind the passing of quarterback Jerold Montano, whose 20-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to Michael Kahahawai proved to be the winning margin in the nonconference game at Menlo.

Claremont (3-2) led, 9-0, after Chris Dabrow’s 19-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Earlier in the quarter, Menlo’s Michale Giusti centered the ball out of the end zone on a punt attempt, giving Claremont a safety. Menlo (5-1) came back on a 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

UC Santa Barbara 35, La Verne 12--Quarterbacks Mike Curtius and Steve Armstrong combined for 300 yards passing and 3 touchdowns as the Gauchos routed La Verne in a nonconference game at Santa Barbara. Curtius, a freshman starting his first game, threw touchdown passes of 8 and 20 yards and combined with backup Armstrong for 300 yards on 17-of-31 passing.

Armstrong hooked up with wide receiver DeShaun Evins for a 84-yard touchdown play in the fourth quarter for the Gauchos (5-1).
