Orange County Community College Football : Mission Conference : Riverside Ends OCC’s Streak, 28-14

Orange Coast College quarterback Keith Jarrett threw five interceptions, four in the second half, as Riverside ended the Pirates’ winning streak at four with a 28-14 victory Saturday in a Mission Conference football game in front of 2,000 in OCC’s LeBard Stadium.

Riverside safety Shannon Duncan set a conference single-game record with four interceptions, three against Jarrett.

Jarrett, who had 11 touchdown passes and 5 interceptions entering the game, wasn’t the only standout to have problems for OCC (4-1, 3-1).

Running back Bart Recktenwald, the top rusher and scorer in the conference, fumbled in the first half to set up a Riverside touchdown. And wide receiver Junior Tagaloa, the No. 2 receiver in the conference, marred a record-setting day with a pair of dropped passes, including a one at the goal line in the fourth quarter.

Tagaloa had 6 catches for 50 yards and moved into first place on the OCC all-time list in career receptions (92) and yardage (1,533). Steve Monahan had 91 catches for 1,508 yards in 1971-72.

Recktenwald, who had 125 yards in 23 carries, committed his second fumble of the season late in the second quarter, and Riverside took over on the OCC 30.

Six plays later, Riverside quarterback Nick Schichtle threw a six-yard pass to wide receiver Mike Kelley for a touchdown as Riverside took a 21-14 lead.

Riverside had taken a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a four-yard run by Clyde Lee (162 yards in 24 carries) and a 12-yard pass for a touchdown from Schichtle to Jordan Reeves.

OCC tied the score in the second quarter on a 12-yard run by Recktenwald and a 43-yard pass play from Jarrett to Recktenwald. Jarrett completed 20 of 38 passes for 203 yards.

OCC was in Riverside territory six times in the second half but failed to score.

OCC linebacker Philip Nabal recovered a fumble on the Riverside 45 early in the second half, but on first down at the 12, Jarrett’s pass into the end zone was intercepted by Duncan.

On OCC’s next possession, Jarrett’s pass bounced off Tagaloa’s hands at the goal line.

The drive was stopped three plays later when Mondo Boyd intercepted Jarrett’s pass at the 15.

Riverside then went on an 11-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a one-yard touchdown run by Schichtle to give Riverside a 28-14 lead with 14 minutes left.

Linebacker Kevin Thomas was the next to intercept Jarrett, this time on the Riverside 12.

After a Riverside punt, Duncan, who also had an interception in the first half, got his third interception at the Riverside 15 on a tipped ball with two minutes left. His fourth interception came at midfield against Mike Angelovic, who replaced Jarrett for the final series.

In other Mission Conference action:

Saddleback 28, San Diego Mesa 7--Saddleback (3-2, 3-1) moved into a tie for first place in the conference with Riverside and Orange Coast by defeating San Diego Mesa (2-3, 2-2). Aly Diaz carried 18 times for 94 yards and scored a 2-yard touchdown to lead the Gauchos. Quarterback Howard Gasser completed 12 of 25 passes for 162 yards, no interceptions and one touchdown to Kelly Ryan.

Rancho Santiago 28, Southwestern 10--Quarterback Rick Burns was 11 of 17 for 176 yards, including a 78-yard touchdown completion to Alex Trabatoni and a 7-yarder to Ed Nasser, as the Dons won in front of 500 at Santa Ana Stadium.

Glenn Cambell had 23 carries for a game-high 93 yards and a touchdown and Mike Miscione added 39 yards in 10 carries for Rancho Santiago (2-3, 1-2). The Dons had five interceptions, including a pair by cornerback Richard Lane.

Quarterback Doug Piper was 13 of 24 for 161 yards and a touchdown for Southwestern (3-2, 2-2).
