A volunteer assistant coach has been dismissed and is under police investigation for allegedly distributing illegal drugs to members of the Moorpark High School football team.

Officials refused to reveal the name of the coach or identify the drug, but police confirmed that Bob Noel, the head coach, is not under investigation. The dismissed coach is not a teacher at the school, officials said. No players are under investigation and Noel will not take disciplinary action against them.

“We are viewing the players as victims,” said Mike Brown, the city’s acting police chief and a lieutenant in the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. “It’s an ongoing investigation so I can’t go into too much detail, but we have one suspect under investigation.”

School officials, who had received complaints from team members, alerted the police Thursday. “After we did a preliminary investigation, we called the sheriff’s department within the hour,” school Superintendent Mike Slater said. “The coach was dismissed two hours later.”

Moorpark is a four-year high school in eastern Ventura County with an enrollment of 725. The football team competes in the Tri-Valley League and has a 1-5 record this season.
