SportsScope : Unbeaten El Camino Gridders to Battle Fullerton for 1st

El Camino College, ranked No. 1 in Southern California and No. 2 in the state, plays Fullerton College for first place in the South Coast Conference in a 7:30 p.m. football game Saturday at El Camino. The Warriors, coming off a victory over highly ranked Cerritos, are 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Fullerton, 3-2 and 2-0, was ranked 18th in the state last week. El Camino quarterback Dan Speltz has passed for 1,120 yards and 12 touchdowns with only three interceptions. His favorite target, Dwight Pickens, has caught 21 passes for 430 yards and six TDs. Linebacker Kaiser Noa leads the tough defense with 62 tackles and four interceptions.

In Southern California Athletic Conference football action Saturday, Harbor College (2-4 overall, 2-3 in SCAC) plays at Antelope Valley at 7:30 and Southwest College (3-3 overall, 2-3 in SCAC) is at home against College of the Desert at 1 p.m.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team, riding a six-game winning streak, retains its No. 4 ranking on the West Coast going into Saturday’s home game against Chapman College. The Lady Toros have won all games by shutout and are unbeaten at home in their last 15 games. In that stretch they’ve outscored opponents 51-6, including 25-1 this season. Michele Salas leads the offense with 13 goals and four assists. Saturday’s Chapman game is part of a men’s women’s double-header against Chapman starting at noon.

The Dominguez Hills men, trying to stay in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. race, were 3-7-3 overall entering the week and 1-1-2 in the CCAA. The Toros played a scoreless tie against Bakersfield last week and defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 1-0, on Joe Flanagan’s goal. Flanagan is third in the CCAA in scoring with 11 goals and two assists.

The Loyola Marymount University women’s volleyball team, following Tuesday’s match against Pepperdine, has 10 days off before resuming West Coast Athletic Conference play. The Lions, 9-13 overall and 3-2 in the WCAC, won two matches over the weekend to move back into the conference race. Tiffany Miller had 25 kills against the University of San Francisco and 17 against Santa Clara. Setter Seham Khalaf had 99 assists in the two matches. The Lions resume play Oct. 30 at Santa Clara.

The UCLA men’s soccer team will play the West’s top-rated team tonight when it meets the University of San Francisco at Logan High School in Union City at 7:30 p.m. UCLA, 8-4-1, is coming off a 2-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara over the weekend as Drew Leonard got the shutout in goal and forward Bill Thompson scored both goals. USF, 10-3-2, ranked fourth nationally last week. UCLA has won three of the last four meetings with USF but the teams played a scoreless tie last year in Westwood.
