Woodbridge 30, Costa Mesa 0--The Warriors rolled to their seventh straight victory, downing the Mustangs in front of a homecoming crowd of 1,800 at Irvine High School.
Woodbridge Coach Gene Noji, whose team is 7-0 overall and 2-0 in Pacific Coast League play, called it a “good all-around performance. Our defense really played well, but everything clicked for us.”
Costa Mesa is 1-6, 0-2.
The Warriors were led by running back John Rios, who rushed for 122 yards in 15 carries and caught 3 passes for 41 yards.
Woodbridge wasted little time scoring its first touchdown. Mark Rodriguez returned the opening kickoff 53 yards to the Mustang 37. Four plays later, Warrior quarterback Fred Schweer passed seven yards to wide receiver Dax Jordan for the touchdown. Keith Boothroyd’s kick failed.
With 7:30 left in the second quarter, Boothroyd kicked a 32-yard field goal to make it 9-0. The field goal capped a six-play Warrior drive.
In the third quarter, with 7:18 left, Schweer passed five yards to end P.A. Emerson, and Boothroyd’s conversion gave the Warriors a 16-0 lead.
The Warriors went up 23-0 on Schweer’s 10-yard keeper, Boothroyd making the conversion.
The Warriors’ final touchdown came with 57 seconds left in the game on a 23-yard run by Randy Ramos.
