ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Empire League : Cypress Tops Loara, 9-7, On Dopulos’ 1-Yard Run
Quarterback Pete Dopulos sneaked one yard for a touchdown with 2:09 left in the game to give Cypress High a 9-7 Empire League win over Loara Friday night at Western High in Anaheim.
Dopulos’ run, which came on a fourth-and-goal play, climaxed a 58-yard, 9-play drive. Dopulos, who threw a 38-yard pass to Paul Geldbach to start the march, also had a 15-yard run to set up the winning score.
“I talked to the linemen before the winning touchdown,” said Cypress Coach John Selbe. “I told them it was man-on-man and it was their job to execute, and that’s what they did.”
Cypress (1-5-1, 0-0-1) took a 3-0 lead when Lee Milton kicked a 31-yard field with five minutes gone in the contest.
Loara (3-4, 0-1), which was unable to score from the Cypress 3 in the final seconds of the first half because of a quarterback sack, forged ahead, 7-3, on Coy Collins’ 85-yard run, with four minutes gone in the third quarter.
