Mater Dei Boys, Girls Are Second in Cross-Country Finals

Mater Dei High School took second place in the boys’ and girls’ divisions of the Angelus League cross-country finals held at La Mirada Regional Park Wednesday.

Bishop Amat won the boys’ race with 38 points, Mater Dei (39) was second, Servite (61) third, St Paul (114) fourth, Bishop Montgomery (138) fifth and Pius X (200) sixth.

Craig Waight of Bishop Amat won the three-mile race with a time of 16 minutes 5 seconds.

Steve Hofheinz (16:20) of Servite was second, Mike Neilson (16:39) of Mater Dei third, Scott Matsumoto (16:39) of Mater Dei fourth, Norman Chavez (16:46) of Servite fifth and Paul Carroll (16:53) of Servite sixth.

Kelly Flathers of Mater Dei won the girls’ three-mile race in 19:42 on the same course, but Bishop Montgomery was the girls’ division team champion with 21 points.

Mater Dei (40) was second, St. Paul (90) third, Pius X (96) fourth and St. Joseph (137) was fifth.

Bishop Montgomery bunched its runners in second through fifth: Genevieve Wilkinson (20:02), Amy Pauls (20:10), Julieanne Millar (20:18) and Monica Petroczy (20:23). Monica Scancion (20:29) of St. Paul was sixth.

There will be three more league finals today.

The Freeway League finals are at 2 p.m. at Craig Park in Fullerton. The Garden Grove League finals are at 3 p.m. at Fountain Valley’s Mile Square Park, and the South Coast League finals are at 2 p.m. at Irvine Park.
